Albany Tastevin dinner: Fun way to end the evening. Intensely rich with figgy, date, and maraschino cherry fruit up front, and time in the glass bringing out more high-toned spice and faintly balsamic-like flavours. Very sweet but finishes more savoury, with the back end showing some of those slightly nutty and oxidative notes I might expect in a tawny port.

I'm normally not the biggest fan of young ports, but this just might change my mind. An absolutely fantastic wine that only got better with time in the decanter - love the intensity here with dried plums, figs, lightly nutty notes, and some mocha/dark chocolate savouriness all coming together into a big but very well balanced whole. Leftovers are fantastic the next night with some dark chocolate.

Amazing wine, on the level of some of the best old Madeiras I've had, and with a very similar flavour profile. An array of flavour here, ranging from sweeter fig, caramel, and fruitcake type notes to roasted hazelnuts, smoke, and herbal elements. It's incredibly complex and layered, moderately sweet on the palate but with a surprisingly savoury and almost saline finish, and a wine with impeccable balance. Thanks Pat.

(Mostly) 90s Burgs in Indy (Vida): The same bottle that Adrian posted a note on back in October, and Prof B. was kind enough to bring the remaining half bottle to dinner. All that air, shockingly enough, has not turned this into an acetaldehyde-laden mess of flaws. Very complex and layered, with figgy, raisiny fruit at the core, and layers of butterscotch, toffee, caramel, and more oxidative nutty notes adding depth. Certainly quite sweet, but also very well balanced with bright acids beneath that give it good lift.

Iberian dinner (Milford, CT): What a treat to have this again. Once again it's impossible to put this into words. The complexity is off the charts with an array of smoky, nutty, figgy, caramel, old wood, and other spicy flavours, tremendous intensity and sweetness matched by powerful acidity, and a finish that resonates for minutes after each sip. Spectacular.

Iberian dinner (Milford, CT): Liked but didn't love this - lots of ripe red fruits, figs, raisins, and some caramel and clove notes, but also some sharp VA notes on the nose that I found offputting.

Riesling and Madeiras at Marco's (Milford, CT): Quite the rarity - Marco said he hand-carried this back from Portugal. Remarkable depth here - layers of toffee, dried fruits, caramel, and a faint, funky VA-like note that slowly blows off with more air. There's moderate sweetness here, though it doesn't quite show the level of acidity that I'd like, and feels a bit soft and broad on the back end.

One of the most enjoyable Ports I've had - there's a bit of an oxidative butterscotch and caramel character here which adds to the ripe fruit and figgy flavours, and there's a very complex, slightly savoury aromatic profile that keeps expanding with air. Great wine to finish a wonderful wine dinner on a freezing cold night.

Oh, my. This is a real treat. A remarkable nutty, sweet fragrance that's hard to put into words, and just amazing complexity on the palate with nutty, smoky, caramel, savoury and so many other dimensions of flavour coming together here that it's hard to put it into words. The balance is impeccable, there's stunning length and finesse - this is really something special. Thanks Marco.

Dark red colour with an intense nose showing chocolate, cherries, some spices and alcohol. Sweet in the mouth with more chocolate flavours over red fruits and raisins. Finishes long but shows a little heat.

Dark purple colour in the glass with a little sediment. Nose has incredible intensity showing lots of raisins, dark fruits and berries, some alcohol and spice. Incredibly rich and slightly viscous on the palate with concentrated sweet dark fruits and some chocolate flavours. Finish is long and rich without any of the alcohol (over 20%!) showing. A really great match with chocolate cake.
