Maculan Torcolato Breganze DOC white wine; Winebow, Inc., New York, NY. $34/375 ml, cork finished. Opened a bottle with Terry at Schneider's on Capitol Hill on Tuesday 3/5/2013.
Orange with a green-brown overcast. Full in color.
Tasted from a champagne flute with Terry at Schneiders, after asking him to pull a cork; early on it was quite tight with a tobacco overlay with only fermentation aromas present. Due to the lack of time, I had him splash-decant.
Heavy sweet fruit binding up all the acidity into rich citrus, clove, and earth, and honey fruit. Pleasant juicy bitterness on sides of mouth, giving off vanillin and wood..
After some intense swishing, starts to collect itself into a rather energetic midpalate, and pushes itself into a ball of phenolics, needing time to resolve. Some hidden fruit will, when resolved, throw off rich and sweet scents of this Passito wine. Could be worth buying more and aging a few more years, but not quite up to the quality of the 1985 and other bottlings of this.
