It’s no surprise that a name like this one would eventually be bestowed upon some wine. In as much as the Orbitofrontal Cortex is responsible for smell, taste, emotion, and decision making, all very useful and very much used by wine drinkers.

Not knowing that information before I bought this bottle (I wanted to be a scientist, I never said I made it), the name played the biggest part in my decision to try it out, along with an interesting description of the wine, varietals, and origin.

Upon first taste, I seemed to sense a wine that was reminiscent of a white rhone that might include grapes like Marsanne and Roussanne, which was spot on, along with several other varietals mixed in for good measure; Verdelho, Palomino, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Rousanne, and Chenin Blanc. Combining such an array of varietals leaves much to the imagination, but once tasted, I accepted whatever they put into this wine.

I first thought that the wine might be a product of Australia, given the peculiar name for which they are known. But no, it originates in the Swartland, in the Western Cape of South Africa. The winery is known for unique bottling, this being one and Moment of Silence being the second bottle I acquired; a review of which will be posted when drunk.

The similarity to a white Rhone wine was evident upfront. The Marsanne and Roussanne lend much to the flavors and the similarities to those wines. Bright acidity mixed with melon notes along with a dollop of citrus engaged my palate and left a lasting impression.
Before rushing to your neighborhood wine shop, be it known that I found few listings for any of their wines. There is a distributor in Illinois (that may be why I found it), but it was an email special that captured my interest. There’s a good reason to pick up some should you come across any of their wines especially if this one is any indication of just how nice a wine can be,

Cheers

We really liked this wine. More nuance and less in your face than many Rhone type blends. Nice accomplishment considering the plethora of varietals.

Fresh and some sweetness with a pear element on finish - the 14% tingles a little on the finish
Pleasant enough - little course on the finish with a herby / nettle element and quite ripe fruit

Ethereal nose of rose petals, peony and something savoury like tomato leaf? It's pale red, you get some cherry, rasberry and it's just so damn refreshing. It also has a bit of grip actually. This comes from 75 year old vines in Darling. I bought this bottle while on holiday in South Africa, I have no qualms about immediately repurchasing at 3x that price now in the UK.

This was wine of the night in a line up with some cult natural wines like Ganevat, Bornard, Cavarodes and lots of other stuff.

Smoky citrus peel, peach and yellow plum. Some tropical fruit and herbal notes. Medium to full bodied with good freshness and some toasty notes. Lovely textural grip. Finishes long. Delicious now but no rush.

Lunch with Edouard Labeye with some smart bottles served blind (Radford Dale Organic): The nose unveils a distinctive green Semillon note tinged with intriguing hints of 'kakkebos'. The palate mirrors this greenness, unfolding to spicy, leafy and orange tones. Notable pepper notes add a spice twist. The wine has an orange peel texture and a good acidic backbone, leading to a phenolic presence of green leaves on the close. A challenging wine but worth it.

Pale garnet, aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, red plum & smoke. Decent body with strong acidity and some ripe tannin. To taste raspberry, strawberry, cherry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, leather, smoke & a touch of meat. Good length. Very good. Really nice balance & flavours. Will hold fine but don't see much upside now.

Color: Pale lemon

Nose: Salted lemon, dried white flowers, tea and honey in an ever ever-changing mix.

Taste: Salted lemon, lemon rind and loads of other citrus mixed in between a creeping feeling of acid. And then just at the back: fermentation.

Very nice and interesting - might find a bit more coherence with age.

As other have noted, very light and drinks more like a Pinot Noir. I would say it's currently in its prime drinking window.

Very smooth and silky with pure fruit notes of cranberry and raspberry.

Really glorious, especially in a textural sense: perfectly judged creaminess without any flab or heat. Clean white/yellow fruit, full of flavour yet somehow weightless. I may be underscoring this.

Medium golden. Medium intense nose of apricot, peach, melon, mango, papaya, slight floral notes.

Palate similar. Quite oily texture, moderate acidity, ripe fruits, some bitter notes. Some resemblance to some Northern Rhône whites. 100% Fernão Pires 🍇 🇵🇹. Some sources claim it's the only wine from ZA made on this grape, but others say more. Maybe some of our local experts know? Well made and pleasant as an aperitif, but the moderate acidity means food pairings need to be very specific.

Medium body, light+ acidity.

Not quite as instantly attractive as the first 2 bottles. Maybe showing signs of moving into the less attractive intermediate phase that white rhone varietals can exhibit.

Pale lemon.

Medium plus intensity on the nose with peach, pineapple, cream, chamomile, dried herbs, honey, almond, and biscuit. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate with some beeswax, lemon and pear coming through. Medium body, high alcohol, high acidity, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for ageing.

A bit shy on the nose but a lot of interest. More expressive on the palate - burst of pear and lemon.
