Al palato coerente con il naso. Già buona struttura, medio corpo. Altissima eleganza, setoso, fine, leggero, con tannini di qualità e ben nascosti. Di eccellente beva anche se ancora molto giovane. Fully destemmed. Fermented and macerated for 10 days in stainless steel tanks. Aged on the lees for two months, until the MLF is finished, then the final blend is assembled. Aged for 30 months, first in barriques (partly new) and then in bottles. 14,5% alcohol. Tasted blind. Somewhat translucent and moderately evolved figgy color with a maroon hue. The nose feels sweet, evolved and rather tertiary with rich aromas of dried dates and raisiny dark fruits, some wizened sour cherries, light toasty oak tones, a little bit of tar, a hint of licorice and a touch of mocha oak. The wine feels dry, ripe and somewhat woody on the palate with a full body and evolved flavors of savory wood spice and toasty mocha oak, some dried dates, light raisiny tones, a little bit of sweet, marmaladey cherry, a hint of cocoa and a touch of tar. The structure relies more on the still very tough and aggressively grippy tannins than on the somewhat soft, moderately high acidity. The finish is ripe, savory and evolved with a firm tannic grip and a rather long aftertaste of sweet oak spice and chocolatey toast, some dried dates, a little bit of raisiny dark fruit, light cherry marmalade tones and a hint of tar. This seemed like a modernist Barbaresco that hadn't stood against the test of time. I did enjoy the firm structure here, although the tannins seemed to have become a bit too tough and pronounced after the fruit had faded to some degree. However, the bigger problem was that as the wine had evolved, it seemed that instead of the wood integrating with the fruit, it had only started to stick out in a worst kind of way while the fruit evolved towards this sweeter dried-fruit-end of the spectrum. All in all, it felt like a Barbaresco that was not supposed to be aged for this long, and even if it might've been a rather oaky wine in its youth, I think the wine was still a bit better when it wasn't as old and tertiary as it was now. If a great vintage like 2006 had aged as questionably as this, I wonder how lesser vintages of the same label have evolved? Or then we just had a prematurely aged bottle. Who knows. Alc: H (stated 13.5% abv). Acid: M+/H. Tannin: M+/H, chalky and accumulates. Red and black fruit, fresh and ripe, also some dried. Dark earth, black tea. No oak. I must admit I didn't expect this bottle to deliver such pleasure. If you have this wine, you can drink it in the 2 next years. Not sure that it can improve. Had a glass from a 187 ml bottle as part of the CMS Introductory Level sommelier blind wine tastings. Pale red in color, looks like a burgundy, and similar aromas as well -- strawberry, red cherry. No new oak flavors. On the palate, its medium + acid and tannins. Not as high tannins as I would expect from a 3 year old Nebbiolo, actually. But it makes it more drinkable right now.
