2003 Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino Barolo Bussia Vigna dei DardiNebbiolo more |
1/19/2018 - Mossrose wrote: 92 pointsFirst time this wine has shown a brown tinge in the color and a slight whiff of butterscotch, both of which suggest some oxidation. But the mouth shows a good balance of red and black cherry fruit, a softened texture, rounded and drying tannin, and bright acidity. Overall, the wine is enjoyable by itself, and proved to be very good with most foods, including working surprisingly well with a spicy soup. |

Nothing lean or harsh in the nose. The mouth entry is now smooth, openly fruity, and coating, versus grippy, astringent, and tightly wound. Much more texture and glide in the taste. Overall, the best this wine has ever been. Enjoyable now with food and by itself, but can be readily kept for at least 5 more years. |

12/11/2016 - Mossrose wrote: 93 pointsAn excellent example of how a Barolo benefits from 18 years of bottle age, that takes off the astringent tannic edge, making the wine more rounded, better integrated, soothing, and lets the fine red cherry and red plum fruit finally shine. Likely as good as this wine will ever get, but will remain eminently drinkable for at least another 5 years. |

2/26/2016 - Mossrose wrote: 93 pointsThis 20 year old Barolo was described by only one person as at least 10 years old when served blind to a table of experienced wine drinkers. An inch pour in the glass shows surprising darkness with only a lighter red around the edge. The aromas include nut, mushroom, dried cherry, and European licorice. A sip coats the entire mouth with well integrated flavors of sour pie cherry, rounded but still drying tannin, and softened but still bright acidity. The long finish is resolutely dry yet deliciously fruity. |

9/30/2023 - Nanda wrote: NRMagnum. Decanted for ~7 hours ahead of service. Classically style with fresh, elegant cherry fruit with plenty of floral, licorice and tar notes. The air helped to integrate the structure which is still fairly prickly at this middle age. Early peak drinking. |

1997 Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino Barolo Bussia Vigna dei DardiNebbiolo more |
1/26/2023 - JohnMcIlwain Likes this wine: NRA throwback bottle from the Berkeley Wine Co era, when I was just a pup and the infamous Robert Chadderdon was just a fax or phone call—never an email—away. Double-decanted at 1:30 PM for dinner at 8:30. Fantino 1997 Barolo Vigna dei Dardi has a darkish (given the age) garnet robe with some bricking on the rim. The nose is backwards and a bit unforgiving upon opening. Double decanting and a bit of time wake things up. The nose offers aromas of dried rose, raspberry seed, loamy earth, and bit of balsam with some oxidative wisps and an intriguing—if faint—brothy/umami note . The palate is more overtly fruit driven with mulberry and raspberry compote on the attack, with earthy, and game/leather notes following. There’s a black soil and tarry earth character making up the core with dusty rose water and strawberry sucrosity carrying on to the mid-length finish. Good acidity and warmth rather than heat; nicely resolving and definitely ripe tannins here. Neither the end all nor it’s neighbor be all, but I have no complaints on this raw Maine evening and certainly believe this over-performed the Suckling-favored vintage. Re-buy? At less than $50 way back when, a steal. If you want brilliance or superlatives, maybe look elsewhere in 1997. That said, this is satisfying indeed. |

Light ruby with significant bricking consistent with its age; aromatic, roses, significant balsamic, savory tamari; palate is light bodied, well integrated tannins, superb sweet and savory interplay with soy and balsamic, high but balanced acidity gives the wine vibrancy and lift, balanced 13.5% alcohol, fruit is mostly faded but plenty of tertiary sweetness to replace it; finish is medium length. A very lovely, fully mature Monforte Barolo, at the right time to drink it. 90 |

1/12/2019 - Nanda wrote: 91 pointsTasted along side the '04. This was a bit more mature, round and generous but still a fairly young and tense Barolo in terms of structure. The flavors were a bit more mature but not that delineated or intense. Red cherry, licorice and new leather. Good but not as good as the '04. Should improve with time given the classic style of Nebbiolo. |

12/12/2018 - oldwines Likes this wine: 94 pointsDouble decanted mid afternoon for dinner in the evening. Translucent light to medium ruby color with no bricking. On first opening the nose was effusive with rose petals, tar, chocolate and cherry. The palate has medium to high acidity with some remaining un resolved tannins but still with a great textured mouth feel. Palate reflects the nose with some layers of additional spice and fruit like tart blackberry, red currant, anise and a little porcini and raisin on the finish which is quite long. This is delicious, nearly mature traditional Barolo. Delicious at about 9pm with Veal Oso Bucco...nicely softened and richly textured while still showing great fruit and secondary flavors. |

Light ruby with tawny edges appropriate for age; medium-plus intensity, fading roses, mulch; palate is light bodied, still has prominent tannin structure, slight red fruit, high acidity; medium-minus finish. Characteristic of nebbiolo/Barolo, but with age it seems to have lost intensity without picking up additional complexity. I'll give it some air. 86 now. |

Given the hint of oak here, as well as some of the earthy and leafy notes on the nose, I guessed that this was something like an old school Napa wine with 30 years under its belt. It's a nice enough wine, though if I opened this expecting a nice bottle of nebbiolo, I'd be severely disappointed. |

12/27/2017 - oldwines wrote: 91 pointsDecanted and tasted over 4 hours. Translucent, medium garnet color with a little bricking on the rim. Flavors an aroma's include the usual suspects... floral, roses, earth and cherry. It needs a couple hours to fully open up. Fairly smooth and velvety on the palate with the tannins mostly integrated. The flavors are bright and the acidity is still fairly pronounced. Aftertaste is a little short. Sold though not memorable on this occasion. Not likely to improve with further aging I suspect. |

10/16/2017 - BillBell73 wrote: NRSeems like there may have been some heat damaged bottles given the wide range of opinions here. I got lucky on my second and last bottle - good cherry fruit, moderately complex, an ample amount of flaky sediment but still plenty of tannin left for this to age. If you prefer your Baroli in the youthful stages of maturity with more fruit than funk, this is right in the wheelhouse. |

9/2/2017 - Nanda wrote: 92 pointsThis is a producer who's recent vintages I've loved (2010+), but I have no experience with wines with any age. The 1999 is a classic and elegant Monforte that hits all the right notes --- dried sour cherry, dried florals, some modest tar notes, old leather -- in a balanced frame. Mid weight with moderate concentration, fine grippy tannins and good tension. Should hold and possibly improve with more cellar time. A prototypical and benchmark example of traditional adolescent Nebbiolo. |

7/14/2017 - oldwines Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery nice mature and eminently drinkable Barolo. Great medium dark ruby color with no sign of bricking. Nose is earthy and full of cherry. Well balanced overall and with great texture in your mouth. Fairly long and luscious, still probably in the middle of its drinking window. |

2/19/2017 - oldwines Likes this wine: 90 pointsMedium to dark but translucent garnet with just a tinge of brick on the edge. Nose of underbrush, cherry, cedar, violets and a medicinal/spicy aroma. On the palate I get cherry, clove, cedar, earthy mushroom and a slightly tannic finish with some chocolate. Nicely balanced with plenty of life left. This does scream Barolo at the first sip. Better with some air. |

1/15/2017 - oldwines Likes this wine: 92 pointsSix courses on short notice with some great football: Decanted a 2-3 hours before drinking. It is medium to dark though still translucent garnet, darker than the 2008 Riserva we had next to it but little sign of its late-teen age. On the nose I get some earthy truffle, cherry and roses. This is a little more modern styled but still clearly Barolo, fairly big but not overdone in any way. Nicely balanced and good with the Pheasant and black rice. |
