2018 Lorenzo Mattoni Montefalco Sagrantinomore |
5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRA user-friendly sagrantino. Classic elements all there, edges rounded. Gritty, tannic, herbaceous, dark and spiced. Great. |

2022 Viña Zorzal Garnacha Navarramore |
5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRCan’t go wrong with this as $15. Alluring floral nose that competes with the best of them. Pure and fresh expression of grenache, light and smooth body. I get dark cherry, a saline streak, no spices. A simple and hedonistic wine. Thumbs up. |

2021 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Les Terrasses Laderas de PizarraCarignan Blend, Carignan more |
5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRPicked this up based on praise for this vintage of Terrasses; I’ve already stocked up on Palacios Gratallops and Dofi and planned to skip Terrasses this year. Glad I didn’t. This is as strong as ever. crimson color, floral nose, incredibly well-knit dark and red fruits (raspberry), beautifully balanced body…a blend that just feels effortless. A hint of vanilla on the finish; maybe that’s the judiciously used oak. |

2022 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône La SagesseRed Rhone Blend more |
5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRThis is so on point. Beautiful floral nose of violets and rose. Perfectly balanced on the palate - not exactly lightweight but more airy than its inky color implies. Ultra smooth, packed with dark fruits and more candied notes on the finish. I would drink this wine every day. For me, just perfect. |

5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRHad not tried this cuvee before and think it’s my favorite from this domaine. Why? The spices. Sweet herbs, rosemary, lavender, thyme. Garrigue to the max but with a medicinal streak you’d expect from a more mature wine. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. |

2020 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Les Hautes GarriguesRed Rhone Blend more |
5/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRTried alongside other 2020s from same domaine. This is the cuvee I usually get and it delivers. Dark inky color, concentrated black fruits mingled with prominent saline, mineral streaks. Lovely balance and upright without too much acid. Velvety smooth body. Behind it there is power. Can’t go wrong with this. |

2019 Domaine Rémi Jobard Volnay 1er Cru SantenotsPinot Noir more |
4/12/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRTried on recommendation. A delicate nose with some salinity and mineral on it…clay makes sense. On the palate it’s effortlessly light, silky and creamy in texture. Has the Volnay perfume - orange blossoms, kirsch. Wish I could appreciate and describe the aromas more but just getting over a head cold. |

2022 Birichino Mourvèdre Old Vines Enz VineyardLime Kiln Valley more |
4/2/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRBased on other reviews, I expected bright and fresh, which it is, but still unmistakably mourvedre. Dark, earthy and mineral laden - limestone particularly evident - but held upright on the palate with staunch acidity and candied fruit, even bubblegum, sprinkled from nose to finish. Like a gamay crossed with a mourvedre. 12.5%. Unique expression, tactful, nicely executed. |

2017 François Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les RugiensPinot Noir more |
3/29/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRDark ruby color. Savory, gamey entry with a saline streak midpalate. Herbaceous notes throughout. Finishes with concentrated dark cherries and baked earth, and lingering bitterness. Thumbs up. |

2017 François Gaunoux Volnay 1er Cru Clos des ChênesPinot Noir more |
3/23/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRNo oak. My style! Slightly reductive nose on first pour gone within 30 seconds. Straightforward and not overly perfumed for a Volnay, but still has that velvety richness. There’s an earthy streak that I believe others are referring to when they say “brambly” or “stemmy,” but it’s not in the foreground compared to, for example, the Pommard from the same domaine. FWIW I prefer the Pommard profile in general, but this Volnay is great and shows typicity, albeit understated. Volnay ain’t Pommard and they both have their time and place! |

2014 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat St AntoniGarnatxa Negra, Grenache more |
3/22/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRThird time through this wine, 10 yrs old now, and still too early. Grenache on clay, from a ridge above the typical slate soil; raised in large used containers with stems included. Monolithic grenache is an oxymoron but if there is such a thing, this is it. Dense and rich but still upright with enough acidity, and permeated with roadside herbs. Flowers there but in the background. Check in on this in 10 more years and don’t be afraid to hold it even longer. |

2014 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La CrauRed Rhone Blend more |
3/15/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRConsistent with notes from others immediately prior, and from self around 5 years ago. Exceeding my expectations for drink window; I have one more and will hold for at least 5 more years, but I enjoy fully resolved and mature wines. This has plenty of garrigue on the nose, and although medium-light body and freshly acidic it still has tannic grip and fleshy red and black fruit. Charming. Only austere in comparison to other vintages of the same wine (and even then only barely), so I hereby call it downright approachable. Tasted in parallel with 2014 Gigondas from the Bruniers (Racines), which as expected shows more licorice, black fruit, tannins, and heft overall. But very consistent with each other. Do not give short shrift to 2014! |

2014 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas Les RacinesRed Rhone Blend more |
3/9/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRPoured via Coravin with aeration head. I was concerned this would be closed without decanting based on prior comments but it was open off the bat. Nose wasn’t so much reserved as peppery and almost piney; not the typical Racines bouquet. On the palate it was familiar Racines: dark dark fruits with plenty of reglisse and sweet herbs. Mission fig and black olive tucked away too. The midpalate is more bitter leading to a finish somewhat medicinal and yeah a touch alcoholic. I had modest expectations for this vintage at this age and this handily surpassed them. I won’t be in a rush to drink the rest of my 2014s. To be sure it ain’t ‘05, ‘07, ‘09 or ‘10, but still nothing to write off. |

2022 Birichino Grenache Old Vines Besson VineyardCentral Coast more |
3/3/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRI like this for its pure and unique expression of place. The alpine herbs come through loud and clear - on the nose and even moreso on the palate. There also are some kirsch notes in the background but this is more about mineral and terroir than fruit. My reaction on first sip was “sandstone” but in reality I believe it’s granite, pine and mountain herbs. That should paint the picture. Nice balance, light on the palate yet not overly acidic. Some of the grapes went through apassimento, which had me concerned this would be on the sweeter side but absolutely not the case here. It just amplifies the existing aromas. No idea how this will age but I’ll pick up another one or two and hold for 5-10 years to see. |

2/29/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRThis has stuffing; nearly same impression as prior taster 8 years ago. Tobacco, licorice and a cocoa finish. Heavy, viscous body that tastes like a forest fruit smoothie followed by a shot of espresso. Would not guess this is already 17 years old. A classic California Petite that plays to expectations. |

2012 Domaine Follin-Arbelet Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Clos du ChapitrePinot Noir more |
2/29/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRPours garnet with a thin translucent rim. Nose is serious and spiced. There is an herbaceous streak hiding behind this and yet to fully emerge - I think this is still evolving. Balanced body, even a little bitter with generous dark fruit. Supposedly this is earlier to mature and drink than the domaine’s other 1er Cru from Aloxe-Corton (Vercots) but to me this tastes like it is not yet at peak. Drinkable today for sure but if I had another bottle I would hold for several more years. |

2/29/2024 - JonBarnes1 wrote: NRSecond pour from a Coravin; first one was 3 weeks ago. Perfumed feminine nose not unlike Chambolle. Silky body with slightly dark and sweet fruit like maraschino cherry. Surprisingly lively acid on the long finish, maybe a little too much for me. Also just a smidge of oak which for me also is too much. Very nice even if it doesn’t fully hit the bullseye for my taste. |

2/14/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRDark ruby pour. Nose is modest with red fruit and a little alcohol. Dry and nicely balanced on the palate, with baking spices and warm earth. Long saline finish. Elegant, pure expression of terroir without interference from oak. Great bottle. For a little more $ I’d opt for Les Rugiens from same domaine - just a bit more complex and sturdy, but both are superb. |

2019 Lectores Vini Priorat ClassicGrenache Blend, Grenache more |
2/9/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRThis grew on me. First pour from Coravin was nondescript; second pour a week later was open with a strong nose of violets, balanced body with ample fruit and a zing from the llicorella. Rather than call this entry level I would say it’s an “approachable” well-built and typical Priorat. |

2021 Clos Erasmus Priorat LaurelGrenache Blend, Grenache more |
2/8/2024 - JonBarnes1 Likes this wine: NRMore polished than the prior vintage. Still young and primary, easy to drink and hard to resist. Red and black fruits wound tightly into a light body for a Priorat. Still a mouthful. Balanced acidity gives it energy. Roadside herbs and spices are there but are yet to move to foreground. Tannins hidden. Just the slightest bit of mustiness on the nose though. Medium short finish. |
