2020 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta

Wow, might be the greatest Barbera there is. This wine took me on a journey. Extremely funky, meaty, earthy nose upon PnP, then more gamey, animale flavors. Where was the fruit? Reminded me more of Northern Rhone than Piemonte. After an hour decant it began to shine. Sweet red berries, lavender, leather, camphor, cedar, musk. Each sip revealed a new layer - that garam/curry/cinnamon note one can find in aged Barolo. Orange peel, chambord, and other black-fruited liqueur. Burgundian, power without weight. Like a really exquisite village or 1er Cote de Nuits. Still beguiling on Day 2 but the 15.5% alcohol started to punch through. This has 94+ potential with some more time in the cellar.

Opened way too young I guess. All oak notes on PnP - but much better after 3 hr decant. Plum, blackberry jam, black pepper, tobacco and green pepper, but like a really delicious velvety green pepper that’s been braised in mole sauce or something. Have the opportunity to pick up a few more bottles at a good price but I’m undecided.

This is drinking well - I agree with the comment below that the nose overdelivers and makes up for the short length. Not totally sure about its QPR but it is delicious. The toasted almond, vanilla and cream on the nose is subtle and in balance with the minerality and acidity. Pear, orange zest, even a touch of something herbal - rosemary? - a little melon most likely from the grechetto. Drink now.

Still powerful acidity. Intense nose of whole spices, cardamom and clove, wet soil, and mushroom. On the palate - stewed plums, game, walnut, soy sauce, a little bacon fat peeking through after 30 min. Medium body, medium+ acidity. Started to fall apart after a few hours. Drink now.

This surprised me. I was disappointed on PnP, a thin acid bomb, but this was much much better on Day 2. Unmistakably Chambolle fruit - weightless on the palate but with layers of lavender, sandalwood, baking spice and black fruit. Really solid village showing - it compared favorably to the 2019 Dujac I had recently. Definitely needs more time but I like where it's headed. As to price, I paid $80 USD for it. Maybe it's a sign of the times but I'm thrilled whenever I pay <$100 for Burgundy and it delivers.

Surprised at how big this was upon PnP - balsamic, black cherry, perfume, some definite heat. Still very distinctively Sicilian. Opted not to decant but to have a glass and wait until tomorrow.

Much much better on Day 2: soft tannins, cranberry, mint, blueberry compote, herbs, balsamic, chestnut?, even a little animal fat. Short finish but with a nose/palate this pretty I wasn't complaining. Ready to drink now, may go another year or two.

This is still drinking nicely and appears to be properly rated on the site. Fresh berries, raspberry, plum, cherry, some baking spice and a persistent note of black licorice. Not totally convinced of its aging potential but decent QPR and went well with a casual dinner of pizza and pasta.
