December 21, 2023 - 12/21/23-College football Bowl games. Cork intact, maybe 1/8th inch infiltrated. Almost has a slight gamay aroma. First sip was almost cherry like. Was not expecting that. Bright. Tannins low. Really reactive on tongue when swished.
Now open one hour. Wine has smoothed, cherry almost gone, starting to get the French syrah style more. Agree with others this needs time to open and evolve. Wine acts like a sponge you cram in a box but expands when you open the lid.
Now 24th. The doesn't exactly taste like a gamay but its similar and very slight. Still very bright. I don't have much experience with wines from this particular region so I don't know if this is typical. It's not bad but I was expecting more a syrah style, and this to me is more like a cross between a gamay and an Oregon pinot. Not a repurchase for me but willing to try more from Saint Joseph region. An observation. Had a peppermint candy, the soft ones that I used to see in doctors offices, the ones that dissolve instantly...and the cherry bright profile receded and the wine was much more enjoyable.
