Flight 1 (3 notes)
Couple of openers
White
2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet
From 6L. Really good. Waxy and youthful. Citrus, some butterscotch hints. Full bodied, with a nice mineral undercurrent but more than enough fruit to match. Great acidity. Expected this to be great, but exceeded expectations - really good.
White
1996 Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet
From 1.5L. Hazelnut oil nose, with some oxidation showing. Full bodied, round, and viscous palate. Honeyed notes. Not quite there, but some nice elements.
White
2000 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard
Ripe citrus and tropical fruit. Nice tension, with some waxy notes, and a very rich, forward palate. Some alcohol on the finish. Very ripe, but nice wine.
Flight 2 (2 notes)
With crab cakes + grilled halibut
White
2003 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc
From 1.5L. Great tropical fruit notes. Not as big as I remember. Firm acidity and mineral backbone. Very nice.
White
2000 Sine Qua Non Roussanne The Hussy
From 1.5L. Petrol notes. Somewhat top-heavy. Waxy, weighty body, with lots of alcohol. Fading.
Flight 3 (2 notes)
Morel soup
Red
1964 Château Angélus
Some dirty laundry on the nose, along with a nice spice undercurrent. More elegant styling. Nicely rounded palate with red fruit notes. Enjoyable.
Red
1964 M. Chapoutier Hermitage
Muted aged red fruit and spice. Surprisingly simple, but still alive. Well-rounded, and certainly fully mature. OK.
Flight 4 (2 notes)
Grilled quail
Red
1998 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg
Still very young, and even a bit closed. Medium bodied. Sexy red fruit notes. Somewhat rough tannins. Very nice elements.
Red
2001 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg
Really fine structured and svelte compared to the 1998. Same great, sappy red fruit and mineral components. Very young. Really nice.
Flight 5 (6 notes)
More quail
Red
1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
This is really good. Earthy red fruit notes. Sappy. Still very young and even somewhat primary, but for a reasonably rounded structure with few edges. Stunning stuff.
Red
1991 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
Mostly sous-bois notes and red fruits. Mature. Medium bodied. Masculine styling. Really nice.
Red
1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
Some hints of sulfur. Red fruits. Very hard-structured and a bit hard to read at this stage. Needs time.
Red
1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
Great elements, but a heavy dose of sulfur masks these now. Robust red fruits. Fine structure. Mineral notes. Should be stunning at some point.
Red
2003 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin
This is delicious. None of the spoof or saccharine notes that sometimes plague '03. Deep dark fruit notes. Plush feel, but grainy tannins complement things nicely. Young but great.
Red
1976 Georges Lignier et Fils Clos St. Denis
From 3L. Amber color. Dusty old fruits. All sous bois - rustic and acidic. Not especially tannic for '76. OK, but firmly in the "would have been better a few years ago" camp.
Flight 6 (3 notes)
Roast suckling pig and beef
Red
1998 Château Ausone
From 1.5L. This is great. Medium bodied. Sexy and elegant dark fruits and a great clarity to everything. Floral notes. Certainly young, but enough balance that this can really be enjoyed anytime. Fine tannins. Really good.
Red
1996 Château Valandraud
From 1.5L. Consistent with last note, but an oaky note on the finish I don't normally find in Valandraud. Medium bodied. Tobacco and dark fruits. Nice wine.
Red
1995 Château Léoville Las Cases
From 1.5L. Refined, dark fruits and muted graphite/tobacco notes. Surprisingly elegant. Fine structure. Very nice.
Flight 7 (2 notes)
Red
1996 Harlan Estate
From 1.5L. Characteristic ripe fruits. A surprising green streak I don't normally find with Harlan. Plush. Fine structure. Very nice.
Red
2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon 25th Anniversary SunSpot Vineyard
From 1.5L. Flashy red and black fruit. Graphite notes. Plush, round wine. Reminds me a lot of Hillside. Grainy tannins. Very young. Really nice.
Flight 8 (6 notes)
Red
2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo
From 1.5L. This actually seems restrained next to the Clos st. Jeans. Meat and tobacco notes. Fine structure. Well balanced. Nice but doesn't stand out.
Red
2003 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina
From 1.5L. Big, flashy wine. Deep dark fruit liqueur. Alcohol. Fine tannins. Tame style versus the more recent releases. Solid.
Red
2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Sanctus Sanctorum
From 1.5L. Huge wine. Châteauneuf liqueur. Very similar to the '07 Machina. Grenache-driven sweaty leather notes. Lots of alcohol. Intense. Very enjoyable, but not for everyone.
Red
2000 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins
Surprisingly tame. Dark grenache notes and a meaty, tobacco and cassis streak. Only a bit of the rusticity I normally get from Bonneau. Nice.
Red
1998 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle
From 1.5L. Surprisingly good modern La Chapelle. Dark fruit. Tobacco. Grainy tannins. Firm. Very young.
Red
1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle
Surprisingly tame. Firm tannins and somewhat muted dark fruit. Showing very little. Still have yet to see anything special in this wine.
Flight 9 (3 notes)
After hours
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny
Very young and wrapped up. Dark fruit. Tense. Some spice and hard tannins. More masculine styling. Hard to read right now, and current impression is less enjoyable than the '02 Amoureuses.
Red
2002 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Musigny
Delicious wine. Very Roumier in style with a pure, clean red/black fruit quality. Even being very young few seams, and a firm structure on the finish. This is great.
Flight 10 (3 notes)
After after hours
Red
1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cabernet Alzero
Chocolate and port. Sweet sense to the nose. Big, full bodied wine. Fine tannins. Still very young. Delicious.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Château d'Yquem
Honey and citrus notes. Tropical fruits. Great combo of viscous and full bodied, and balancing structure. Really nice.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rieussec
Ripe citrus, tropical fruits, and honey notes, but as always a great brightness and vibrance. Still very young. Wonderful clarity. Delicious.
