Introduction

All wines decanted for 3 hours

Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
1999 Ibernoble Ribera del Duero Crianza Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
81 points
Very strong wet potato - clearly TCA tainted. I did not try to remove the TCA which I will do next time as it doesn't take long to do.

Ignoring the TCA, this has aged too long and has a short finish with moderate tannins but is thin.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
1995 Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
85 points
Clearly a better wine than the previous Tempranillo even though this is 4 years older. Has a very interesting and confusing bouquet - a light lead pencil, but a very clean one. Also a touch of dry potato with a cleanliness that was softly pleasant. Nice moderate tannins ands ofter acids than often in a Tempranillo.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2002 Anakena Carménère Reservado Chile, Rapel Valley
86 points
A hint of the guava on the nose was the classic give away for this Chilean Carmenere. But the guava nose was a lot less pronounced than I ever remember and is probably aging quickly now. A dry short finish.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2002 Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
88 points
Light raspberry on the nose. Strong tannins and smooth with a light acid bite in the finish.

When we unveiled later - amazing that this was the 02 and it was better than the 01. Definitely smoother and more rounded with a fuller body.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2001 Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
87 points
This wine seems to be thinning and was definitely not as smooth and rounded as the 02. Good moderate tannins but just an OK wine at the moment - maybe it is in a closed period?

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2005 Muratie Wine Estate Ansela van de Caab South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
88 points
This may still be a bit young - definitely different to my last tasting and maybe it just needed more decanting. Nice berries and chocoloate to start but with a little heat from the acidity. Definitely got better as the evening moved on. I will retry some tomorrow or Monday.
