Yamhill Carlton Tasting Event

The Armory, Portland Oregon

Tasted August 30, 2010 by subtlet with 730 views

Introduction

This event was hosted to promote wines from the Yamhill Carlton AVA. There was a great producer turnout for this, so these notes probably represent less than 50% of the wines available. This was an excellent event that makes me wish it was on a weekend!

Flight 1 (23 notes)

Red
2008 EIEIO Pinot Noir Cuvée Y USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Roast beef, blackberries and strawberries show on the nose. It has a nice mouth feel to it, with good acidity all the way across. It feels light with raspberries and strawberries showing well along with some soft dirt notes on the side of the palate. The strawberries linger very enjoyably. The flavor and texture are already showing very well, and they are impressively integrated too.
Red
2007 Carlton Cellars Pinot Noir Cape Lookout USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

The nose is on the darker side, showing blackberries and vanilla from full oak character. Red grapefruits deliver immediately on the palate, along with some plum flavors. The oak builds on the mid palate, delivering dark vanilla and some wood tannins that are full and end up being a bit larger than the soft texture that the wine has otherwise.

The nose is dominated by structure, showing leather and vanilla oak while some blackberry scents maneuver underneath it all. It's very dark, rich, and ripe on the palate. Soft blackberries show through, but as in the nose, the oak is in the forefront. The oak flavors are smooth, and the texture of the wine is good, but the fruit seems to be taking a back seat to the structure. It's not really my style, but I'm sure some people would really love this.

2008 Atticus Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

The nose is complex and interesting. It reminds me of a smoky oak fueled bonfire by the sea. Later, some great blueberry scents show as well as some pie crust. Dark cherries with thick skins deliver immediately on the palate. The oak comes in fully, but it remains in balance. There's a hint of something tart towards the finish, and a gravelly mineral note as well. 89-
Red
2006 Alexana Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
88 points
Leather, leaves, and dark raspberry flavors show on the nose. Bright cherries, along with a faint tart note hit on the palate. Vanilla oak shows, and the tannins still dominate the structure toward the finish. A little bit of earth shows. 88-

The nose reminds me of grapefruit with the peel intact as well as dark strawberries. It has a nice, light feel on the palate and the acidity plays well. Clean blackberries and plum skins deliver well. The tannins are light, and they have good length.

2008 Adea Pinot Blanc Mora Family Vineyards USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Light peach scents, and some faint lemon show on the nose. The citrus on the palate reminds me more of limes than lemons. The peach flavors deliver, and there is evident sweetness. The citrus components keep everything under control though. Everything runs out long on the finish, and the acidity ends up drying pleasantly in the end.

2007 Adea Pinot Noir Fisher Family Estate USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Juicy grapes show on the nose along with sweet tarts, and some raspberries. The grapes deliver on the palate and some sweet tarts even show up in the texture! Some light earth shows as well, and the experience is solid overall. 88+

Blackberries, raspberries, and a faint bit of shoe polish appear on the nose. The wine is soft on the palate, with good acidity and fruit. The oak is even. It isn't entirely integrated yet, but the vanilla flavors show well. The acidity lingers too, leaving me with the impression that this will improve significantly with some time in bottle. 88- now, but it will almost certainly improve.
Red
2007 Biggio Hamina Cellars Pinot Noir Deux Vert USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
89 points
The nose shows blackberries, plums, and leather. The tannins are even, and they grow a bit on the finish without getting too large. Some soft plums on the mid palate evolve to become rich blackberries late. The evolution there is pretty cool!

Blackberries and faint earth show on the nose along with some interesting red grapefruit scents. The wine has a soft, rich touch on the palate, and good fruit delivers pretty quickly. The structure is light, but it lingers well showing dark earth tones. The acidity is light but full, and the wine seems gentle but pretty straightforward overall.

Ripe and full blackberries burst onto the nose showing a hint of jam and leather as well. Full oak shows all across on the palate, while some solid blackberry flavors evolve and run long. The structure is balanced excellently with acidity drying well as the blackberries run late. I really look forward to trying this in a year. The oak here is a little more than I usually like, but I still really enjoyed the wine. If you enjoy full oak on your wine, this would likely be a huge winner.
Red
2007 Carlton Hill Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
87 points
Forest floor is full on the nose showing dark earth and some strawberries as well. When tasted, there's a burst of blackberries and raspberries that linger well. The forest floor funk shows on the mid palate, and everything gets pretty dusty on the finish.
Red
2007 Carlton Hill Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
88 points
The nose is dark and savory, showing dark raspberries and marinated roast beef. Light raspberries show quickly on the palate with oak playing evenly. The oak helps to deliver full roast beef flavors on the mid palate along with some good citrus notes. Leather and oak show fully on the finish.

2008 North Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

The nose is inviting, and it shows caramel and cherry pie notes. Bright acid and well balanced tannins work together for a smooth delivery on the palate. Great tart cherry and raspberry flavors show. The finish has a bit of length to it as well.
Red
2007 Soter Pinot Noir Mineral Springs Ranch USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
91 points
The nose is full and delectable. It shows apples, strawberries, some faint oak, and steaks on the grill! Raspberries show immediately on the palate, as well as some rhubarb. Cherry flavors show up on the middle along with wonderful acidity. Soft tannins dry the mouth out. The structure is excellent from beginning to end, and the fruit runs out long on the finish. This is really solid now, and it's got potential to get even better with age.
Red
2000 Stag Hollow Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
92 points
The nose is dark and heavy with dark blackberries and honey scents showing and a bit of oak sulks underneath it all. Juicy strawberries and dusty tannins roll around on the palate, while the honey makes a polite, but brief appearance. The age has worked very well on this wine, and the texture on the palate is very elegant making it much more approachable than most wines with this dark sort of character. The fruit lingers for well over 20s on the finish and is delicious for every second!

2000 Stag Hollow Pinot Noir Vendange Selection USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
91 points
Some earthy scents appear along with honey, clover flowers, and full rich blackberries. Cherry flavors hit immediately on the palate, and they linger long while acidity evolves to dry things out slowly. The oak is balanced very well at this point. The acidity makes the mouth water on the finish and makes it clear that this bottle has plenty of time left in it if you're inclined to hang on to it for a while. The fruit persists on the finish, which I really like. The length and structure here are rock solid. 91+
Red
2007 Soléna Pinot Noir Domaine Danielle Laurent USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
87 points
The nose shows some dark strawberry notes, as well as an interesting scent of campfire ash that I see more often on older Oregon Pinot Noir. Rhubarb and strawberries show on the palate, as well as a hint of something green. The structure shows late on the palate, along with a hint of earth. 87+
Red
2008 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Dark cherries with thick skins appear on the nose, along with soft, dark earth. Good structure shows on contact. Good, juicy blackberry flavors show as well, and a hint of mint that shows its green side toward the finish. The oak is powerful late here as well.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Kramer Vineyards Müller-Thurgau Celebrate USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pears and some fruit cocktail syrup show on the nose as well as a light floral note. The wine is quite sweet showing pears and honey. It has a playful feel to it, and a soft touch.
Red
2007 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
90 points
Thick grape skins show on the nose, mixed in with earth and faint hints of heat and blackberries. The blackberries are delicious on the palate, and the work in harmony with citrus components. The tannins are light, and they provide enjoyable and balanced structure. Toward the finish, some juicy raspberries appear, and they linger as the structure dries the mouth out fully. Very nice 90+
Red
2008 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Savoya Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
88 points
Some faint Oregon funk hits the nose as well as some dark cherry and floral notes. The wine is balanced and even on contact. Raspberries and cherries show immediately, but they aren't integrated into the full experience quite yet. Dusty tannins and balanced oak show on the finish. The components are good here, but it'll take a little more time in bottle before they're all playing well together. 88+
