Flight 1 - Burgundies (4 notes)

Red
2007 Lucien Le Moine Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
87 points
Very lovely and alluring nose. Sweet, slightly meaty. Not the most structured Burg and does feel like its made for early drinking. That's not a bad thing as this was really packing good substance in a lightweight package. Excellent persistence with good pinot character. This is really what Burgundy is all about.
Red
1996 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
87 points
Quite meaty and sauvage. Stil tannic. I get a lot of soil on the nose. Good extract but felt that the fruit might be fading somewhat as it was rather lean. Balance still there but perhaps lacks a little class to be truly excellent.
Red
1999 Domaine de L'Arlot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
88 points
Candied cherries, citrus. I tasted a bit of stems aka greenness. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as they tend not to destem. Still rather tannic with the structure holding up well. Light-bodied but perhaps lacks a tad of complexity. Delicious now but would benefit with more age.
White
2007 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
91 points
Oaky and restrained in the beginning but really showed its stuff with some time in the glass. Lemons and resin on the palate and the nose got so much better. Not a bruiser ala Batard. Great persistence but perhaps a little drying at the back-end. Many years ahead of it.

Flight 2 - Rieslings (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2009 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
86 points
This bottle seemed to be rather advanced. Quite flabby and clumsy. Sweetness felt like a Auslese GK. This is what I would expect from a vintage like 06, not 09. The grace of Dönnhoff is hidden in here somewhere.
White - Off-dry
2008 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Very well balanced. Staining intensity yet displays the gracefulness of a Mosel. The sweetness does not mask the terroir. Killer wine. Bravo!

Flight 3 - Miscellaneous (6 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
82 points
Stinky in the way that most CDPs are. Quite transparent to the terroir. Felt it was rather weak now and perhaps time to drink up.
Red
2003 Sesti (Castello di Argiano) Brunello di Montalcino Phenomena Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
86 points
A classic Brunello which punches above its level in this difficult vintage. Excellent persistence and the mocha notes were very prevalent. Somehow I can't find myself emotionally attached to it though. Lacks excitement?
Red
1995 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
82 points
Somehow this did not impress me as much as the others. Tobacco on the nose, but not overwhelmingly. Short finish and quite anonymous. I've had better classic clarets in this price range.
Red
2007 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
79 points
Urgh. Over the top. Sweet candy and pungent nose. I had difficulty drinking more than one sip of this. As the rest mentioned, this is an honest wine reflecting the terroir of Napa. So this is probably not an objective tasting note. Lovers of Napa should like this very much.

White
1990 Robert Ampeau & Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
85 points
Golden. Oxidative in style. I guessed an 03 or 06 white Burgundy. Nutty on the nose and rather ripe. Resin. A little too rich for me.
Red
2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
85 points
Second time tasting this and doesn't seem to have evolved. Still extremely young and fresh. Austere as expected for a Clos Vougeot. Red fruited core. Everything is in place but nothing particularly stands out. This should be more interesting once it gains secondary characteristics.
