Wine Vault

Introduction

Some of the most memorable tastings were the ones that happened without prior planning. Des, Captain KH and I made our way to the vault on a Friday evening where we bumped into Gazza. My offer to open a bottle of 91 Cros P flushed out 2 other Jayers and a superb Ponsot. Hubert managed to convince David to stop by when he saw what was being opened and a photo of the bottles sent to Tom sent him dialing for a cab. A bunch of guys who not afraid of pulling corks!

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
1983 Henri Jayer Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
This was quite ready from the time we pulled the cork but did improve in the glass. What would otherwise have been a star in its own right was eclipsed by the 89 and 91 Cros P today.
Red
1989 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Really nice but this bottle was pipped by the 91 Cros P today. Still a lovely bottle. US sourced.
Red
1991 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Unbelievable. One of the best bottles I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. An emotional experience. Still young. May Henri RIP. We miss him.
Red
1990 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
95 points
Great bottle of wine. You can taste the heat from this vintage and probably somewhat atypical for the wine but Ponsot managed to keep it all under control. More than held its own today against 2 Jayer Cros P and 1 Jayer Ech. That about says it all. Will hold and get better! Definite upside. Hoping one day I can have this side by side with a Lignier CdR 90.
White - Sparkling
1989 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart France, Champagne
95 points
An ethereal champagne drinking at peak.
