Meursault

Introduction

Great opportunity to taste 2009 and 2008 reds and some 2007 with two great hosts - proprietor Martin Prieur and oenologist Nadine Gublin. I previously had the opportunity to have dinner with Nadine each of the last three years at Wildman's annual Chicago visit as part of their US tour. It was great to meet with her this time in Burgundy, as she was stressing the week before harvest.

Flight 1 - 2009 Red (8 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Starts with mix of red and black fruit on nose, then mostly red fruit on the palate, seemingly less ripe than the nose might imply. Some real tannic structure introduced itself in the middle providing some real structure. This has good intensity at finish and great backbone.
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Great aromas of raspberry and red cherry which follow through nicely to the palate. This wine is already accessible today from barrel, with lots of charm and good texture. At the same time, the finish was long and evolving. A personal favorite today.
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Clearly has lots of ripe fruit which showed more strongly on nose than palate. Fruit was nicely balanced with minerality and acidity, which really support great clarity and length on finish. I frankly preferred the Volnay Champans, but think this wine might have more long-term aging potential.
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Just finished malolactic fermentation 2 weeks prior. Very structured and dense. Impossible for me to fairly assess today.
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. On the more elegant side for Cos Vougeot, with a good balance of red and black cherry fruit flavors, with similar aromatic profile that shows a bit more intensity and heat. Nicely integrated already, I expect this will drink nicely young. I always ask about where producers' vines are located within Clos Vougeot, and Prieur's oenologist Nadine Gublin explains their plot is situated near the top...of the bottom third!
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Interestingly, this was one of the first wines to complete malolactic fermentation, in early spring. really great primary fruit, surprisingly red for a Chambertin. Nose and palate show raspberry and red cherry, which starts rather moderately but picks up great intensity towards the end. Very long, powerful finish with lots of spice. Impressive.

Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Ripe fruit with Asian five spice blend and soy, showing to me like a Vosne Grand Cru. Great floral charm, then acidity and minerality which keep the ripe fruit in balance. Very impressive length, impressive textures. An exceptional young Echezeaux. No surprise that the Prieur 2009 Musigny was the start of the lineup, but the surprise (for me) was that this Echezeaux gave the Musigny a close contest.
Red
2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Black cherry and blackberry on nose and palate. Great fruit to start with really noticeable density and dry extract, balanced nicely with acidity and very fin tannins. Keeps getting bigger and bigger towards the finish. Really persistent. This will certainly be at least a 95 point wine. No surprise that this was the star of the lineup, but the surprise (for me) was that the Echezeaux gave the Musigny a close contest.

Flight 2 - 2008 Red (5 notes)

Red
2008 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Grèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Good balance of red and black fruit. More fruit than spice. Not quite as fresh or energetic as I would have hoped.
Red
2008 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Good combination of fruit and husky earthy character. Good acidity, minerality and corresponding mouth feel. For me, a big step up from the more primary and simple Beaune Greves.
Red
2008 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Floral nose with charming red fruit, then evolving towards more dense fruit on palate. Impressive balance and accessibility for a young Corton, this wine showcases its spice very nicely.
Red
2008 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Good fruit but moderate on both nose and palate. Came across as one of the more structure and backward wines today. Normally a personal favorite from the Domaine, I was a little disappointed with this wine after how much I had just enjoyed the 2009 Clos Vougeot 20-30 minutes earlier.
Red
2008 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Really an impressive Musigny that emphasizes the vineyards's finesse over its power. That velvet glove was out in force, with sensational spice, floral charm, and lively red fruit well balanced by great acidity and minerality. Fruit is slightly more delicate than I would normally expect from a great Musigny, but I fully expect this will pick up weight with time in bottle.

Flight 3 - 2007 White (4 notes)

White
2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Meursault Clos de Mazeray France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting at Domaine. Ripe fruit on nose, almost tropical, with similar flavors of ripe peach and mango on palate. Very tasty and fun wine, without much nuance of depth. 1/3 new oak, certainly seems like more at present.
White
2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Aromas show ripe fruit with just traces of citrus. Also slightly tropical on palate but more focused on ripe peach and apricot flavors. Good textures, very good acidity helps support a lean, clean finish.
White
2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting at Domaine. Impressive and complex aromatics, very classic aromas of peach, apple and lemon with good spice and floral elements. Palate shows a bit more ripe and rich than I might have guessed from the aromatics, but from middle forward this evolved to more elegance and finesse. Very good acidity, very precise. Well done.
White
2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting at Domaine. From 5 small plots that combine for 9-10 barrels per year. Nose is incredibly floral with rich, ripe fruit - peach, apple and orange zest. Palate is much less ripe but has incredible spice and precision. Intensely mineral-drive, almost chalky in character. wine has an explosive, substantial finish. We starting discussing Prieur Montrachet with our host, Martin Prieur, as we tasted this wine, and I mentioned two wonderful bottle from 1999 and 2000 that I had tasted in the recent past. His perspective is that the best vintage from the past decade is the 2002, with 2000 and 2006 providing the most pleasure today.
