Introduction

Had a nice Friday night dinner at Sun Wah Chinese BBQ with Jill, Johnny and Greg. The theme was Rhone varietals...money.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Greg brought this to start our meal at Sun Wah BBQ.
Tinny. Pink grape fruit. Nice refreshing quality and easy drinking. A little watery.

Johnny brought this to Sun Wah for our Rhone dinner with Jill and Greg too.
Somewhat limited tasting notes. Lovely aromatics. Tropical fruit and just clean fresh air on an island. Stoney wet brioche laced with some butter and fresh lime zest.
The palate is well endowed and really uniquely Old World in some bizarre ways. The wine was all about balance.
There was not too much of any particular aspect - fruit, earth, rock, alcohol, acidity. Everything just...worked.
I absolutely loved this wine and I almost agree with Parker who placed this at 97 pts.
Red
2008 TOR ROCK Grenache/Syrah Hommage Allan USA, California, North Coast

Greg's second offering at Sun Wah Rhone night.
Plump curry spice. Raspberry jam, mocha, fig. Really light anise and sweet caramel.
Toffee, light butter too. Really balanced smoky mouthful of sweet tannins, fruit and baking spice. Layered finish.
Red
2004 The Standish Wine Company The Relic Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Massively structured brooding wine. Thick motor oil like viscosity - completely black. Olives, briny black berries, earthy shrooms. Nice and refined tannins. A dark volcanic rock quality that translates into a savory burnt caramel aroma and flavor.
Really fragrant, pungent and spicy black pepper corns - just cracked. Porty caramel on the back end. Nice acidity but still it's hard to get beyond the massive black fruit. Not overly hot for the unknown (14-16%) alcohol content.
Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah Atlantis Fe2O3~1a, b & c USA, California, Central Coast

Opened about 5 hours prior to consuming. This was a perfect pair with our meal at Sun Wah - the best Peking duck in Chicago.
The color was dense and dull - thick rich juice poured form the bottle with noticeable thickness.
Gorgeous aromatics just erupting from the glass. Spicy creamy raspberries, blueberries and a pronounced white AND black truffle quality that I couldn't stop wooing over. The layers of aromatics both savory and sweet were endless - chocolate, meat, smoke, baking clove, nutmeg and cinnamon, touches of brie cheese. Fantastic experience. New World without a doubt and if I tasted this blind I probably would have said SQN to be absolutely honest. So different from anything else I've tasted. Rich and dense but still completely enjoyable and balanced to a T. My favorite SQN tasted to date. Out of this world spectacular. Currently in my Top ten wines all time. Period.
