1855 Bottle Shop

Tasted November 25, 2011 by ikileo with 528 views

Flight 1 (7 notes)

A tasting organized by a local retailer for the NV basic offerings (most of them) from the big champagne houses. Some hits and some misses. Not all NV Champagne are equal.

The Pommery was very good and interesting though, and my favourite.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuis France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

Nose: Beer and cider notes. Some rubber as well

Taste: Malt notes, very fresh with some cider flavours and green apple notes. Had a rather austere and rubbery finish. Mid-palate was ok.

Overall not really worth it at this point.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

Nose: Started off with some smelly socks but later notes of brioche and white fruits.

Taste: Toasty, white fruits carried over to the palate as well, finishes just slightly austere, but overall it was pretty decent.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut L.P. France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

This champagne was probably out for too long or a flawed bottle. It was flat with little flavour. Perhaps just some citrus notes.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve / La Française France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

Nose: Flinty with some peaches and acacia

Taste: The one with the most fruity notes and some residual sugar. Slightly austere rubbery finish as well. It was ok.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

Nose: White fruits as well as watermelon rind

Taste: dry, clean, toasty but with some fried fruits. Quite fresh as well. Not bad, if not for the price.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

Nose: I don't know if it was flawed but this whole champagne seemed in an oxidized style, but still balanced. barley, malt and honey on the nose.

Taste: Fuller and richer on the palate than the previous ones. Rounder on the mouthfeel which was nice but a slightly short-ish finish. Pretty good, if not for the finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Pommery Champagne Falltime France, Champagne
Tasting portion. Bottle has been opened for an unknown period of time. At least 2 hours prior.

This was the champagne of the tasting for my girlfriend and I.

Nose: Japanese toasted rice and rice water. Scented herbs. Unique and attractive.

Taste: A honeyed texture, good focus on the midpalate, rich wine with along finish. well balanced, rounded in the mouth but persistent bubbles. Layers of lovely flavours. Very nice.
