Introduction

We got 17 people together to choose a red and white to serve at the neighborhood progressive dinner. 4 reds and 3 whites. I opened the reds 2 hours before tasting but did not decant. I tasted the wines immediately after opening and had my wife mix the bottles up and tasted them blind - all ratings and notes below are mine and not the groups. Price point for our event is $10-$13.00 per bottle.

The whites were all drinkable and I would be happy to serve all 3 at a dinner party. The reds were enjoyable as well but I did not like the Espelt Garnacha. My favorite white was the Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling and my favorite red was the Villa Des Anges Cabernet with a tie between the Syrah and the Cab Franc.

The groups favorite white was the Charles Smith, followed by the Chard & then 4 votes for the Picpoul (and as noted below this wine was much better with air). The group's Favorite reds where the villa Des Anges (10), the Oveja Negra Cab Franc / Carmenere (a really funky wine for $10 - excellent nose) with 4 votes and then 3 notes between the remaining two. In hindisght, the South American wines stood out for their herbal / green pepper flavors.

Flight 1 - Whites (3 notes)

White
2010 Charles Smith Riesling Kung Fu Girl USA, Washington
89 points
Very clean nose with lemon zest & petrol. Lemon / slightly herbal flavors with good acids leading into a medium finish with some residual sweetness. My favorite of the 3 whites tasted that evening. 89?
White
2010 Toad Hollow Chardonnay Francine's Selection USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
88 points
Straw colored. lemon / grapefruit on nose & palate. Medium to full bodied with nice crisp mouthfeel. 88-89 #2 of 3 whites.
White
2010 Les Costières de Pomérols Picpoul de Pinet Hugues de Beaulieu France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet
87 points
This wine needs to be pulled out of the refrigirator ~ 15-20 minutes prior to drinking otherwise the aromatics are shut down - I originally would have rated this in the mid to low 80s but when I retasted 1 hour later it was nicer. Green apple / lemon / grassy on nose. Green apple & lemons on palate. Balanced with short+ finish. 86-88 range.

Flight 2 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2009 Espelt Garnacha Empordà Old Vines Spain, Catalunya, Empordà
84 points
Needs to be decanted. On pop & pour this was in the mid 70s. Mid 80s with air time. Smelled like a cheap Beaujolais with simple "Grapey" scent upon opening- with time more / cherry / blackberry on nose. Palate was better than nose (cherry / blackberry) but fruit dominant. Medium body with short+ finish with some green tannins noticeable on the finish. Would not buy again.
Red
2010 Oveja Negra Cabernet Franc/Carmenere Reserva Chile, Maule Valley
89 points
Was able to guess blind given the herbal / leathery Cab Franc nose. Herbal / menthol / black cherry on nose - nice & dirty. Black cherry / leather & cherry cough syrup on palate. Medium to full body, balanced & medium finish. 89+ and would buy again.
Red
2008 Viña Falernia Syrah Reserva Chile, Elqui Valley
89 points
Cigar box / blackberry / black tea on nose. Blackberry, plum, green pepper (with airtime), earthy on palate. Medium body with medium finish. Tasted blind this tied for WOTN (reds) for me. With more airtime I preferred the Villa des Anges 2009 Cabernet. 89+
Red
2009 Villa des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon Vin de Pays d'Oc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
Poor notes on this - herbal / black currants/ blackberry on nose. Medicinal / blackberry & earthy on palate, medium body with some dusty tannins on the medium length finish. Very nice for the money and would buy again. 90+/-
