Flight 1 - Piedmont (5 notes)

Red
2005 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
nose: lovely and perfumed nose of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, tar, red fruits and a touch of floral tones. On the understated side and very elegant

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins that show off the youth of the wine. Balanced and elegant tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, tar and some bits of red fruits blend together behind the acid and tannins

overall: clearly a young barbaresco. This is quite lovely though with a more feminine side that will certainly take some time to fully coax out
Red
2004 Damilano Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
nose: tight, but showing a lot of class with lovely tones of dark red fruits, herbs, dark red cherries and strawberry tones. Good depth showing through the tightness right now

taste: medium bodied with chewy tannins and medium/high acidity. The acidity is definitely overbearing right now and showing the youth along with pretty tones of dark red fruits, tar, herbs, and dark red cherries with a touch of roasted herbs

overall: Certainly in need of time. While it wasn't shut down, it wasn't completely giving either. There's a real lovely barolo waiting to come out
Red
2005 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
nose: pretty and aromatic with lovely tones of red fruits, berries, strawberries and roasted herb tones. Good tones, but lacking depth

taste: elegant and feminine medium body with medium+ acidity with nice tones of red fruits, strawberries, and roasted herbs. The tannins are there, but aren't that rough for a young barolo

overall: this is nice, but lacking the depth that you want from a barolo. Good complexity on both the nose and palate, but it's hard seeing this add more depth with time
Red
2006 Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
nose: very tight and taking a bit to get tones of dark red fruits, perfumes, stawberries and some roasted herbs. Very good depth and tones when they poke out

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity and very taught tannins. The tannins are a bit oppressive but with very good tones of tar, roasted herbs, strawberries and dark red fruits. Good depth as well

overall: this was on the tough side. Extremely young, but with something very good being there. What tones did come through were really good on both the nose and palate. This will certainly need time
Red
2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
nose: well balanced but restrained nose of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, black licorice, and tar

taste: very young with the tannins being very coarse right now. Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity that is fairly piercing along with tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, and tar

overall: This is a very young barolo. The tannins are big and chewy with big acidity as well. While not the most complex barolo, this should develop nicely

Flight 2 - Tuscany (10 notes)

Red
2006 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
89 points
nose: on the more extracted side with tones of licorice, black fruits, herbs, and black cherries. Decent depth, but lacking a bit

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. A bit rough with richer tones of licorice, herbs, dark red fruits and black cherries

overall: A solid brunello. Lacks the savory quality I really want from a brunello. Could use a little time, but this isn't a long haul wine
Red
2006 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
nose: very oak driven nose with rich and extracted tones of anise, black cherries, black fruits, oak, and roasted herbs. Decent depth, but blunted by the oak on the nose

taste: medium/full bodied with very chewy tannins and medium+ acidity. Rich with tones of anise, oak, roasted herbs and black cherries

overall: too much oak and tasted too extracted. It wasn't totally overdone, but it was far from subtle. This could use some time to come together, but I really doubt the oak will pull back enough
Red
2006 La Poderina Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
nose: while tight, this was a very savory nose with tones of dark red fruits, berries, red cherries, wild spices and roasted herbs

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity and very chewy tannins. Extremely young but with excellent tones of dark red fruits, berries, red cherries and roasted herbs

overall: this is very young, but with some real class behind it. There is an elegant and savory quality to it that is very attractive, but this will certainly need time to really show
Red
2004 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
nose: While the nose is on the tight side, it's very savory and quintessentially tuscan with tones of dark red cherries, dark red fruits, spice tones and currants

taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity with big and chewy tannins and savory tones of dark red cherries, dark red fruits, currants and roasted herbs

overall: this is obviously young and in need of serious time. There is a great savory quality to the wine right now and it should really have something to show in a few years
Red
2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
89 points
nose: nicely balanced an aromatic and savory nose with tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, florals, and red fruits.

taste: very good medium body with medium acidity and balanced tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, red fruits and spice tones

overall: A really nice felsina ccr. The acidity isn't there as much as in previous vintages and its slightly lacking right now for it. Nice and perfumed, but not as good on the palate
Red
2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
nose: very aromatic with plump tones of dark red cherries, licorice, roasted herbs and dark red fruits. Showing a ripeness on the tones with good depth as well

taste: medium/full bodied with forward and plush tones of dark red cherries, spices, licorice and roasted herbs. Medium+ acidity as well with some chewy tannins as well

overall: Shows off the forward quality to the vintage. There is good balance to it but with a plump and plush quality as well. This could use a few years to smooth out

Red
2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
92 points
nose: tight, but with good intensity on the savory tones of dark red cherries, roasted herbs, fresh picked roses, spice tones and some red fruits

taste: plush medium body with medium+ acidity and sneaky tannins. Behind the tannins are plush tones of red fruits, dark red cherries, herbs and some fresh picked roses

overall: This could use a few years, but it seems to be an earlier drinking rancia. Well balanced with good acidity+tannins
Red
2008 Tenuta Corte Pavone Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
86 points
nose: richer nose with tones of oak, black licorice, dark red fruits and spice tones. On the riper side with the oak certainly showing

taste: fuller bodied with some chewy tannins and medium+ acidity. The tones have a rich quality to them with tones of oak, black licorice and dark red fruits

overall: the oak is a bit too much on both the nose and palate. Not a bashful rosso and fairly full throttled in a sense.
Red
2004 Tenuta Corte Pavone Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
nose: deep and powerful nose filled with tones of dark red cherries, spice tones, dark red fruits, violets, herbs and loads of berry flavors. There is a real big intensity on this without being over the top

taste: medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The tannins are very noticeable and behind them are powerful tones of dark red cherries, dark red fruits, violets, herbs and berry tones. There is good layering already behind the tannins

overall: This does need some time to fully round into form, but it should turn into a stunner. The class is there already and it just needs some time to fully speak. Great depth on both the nose and palate right now
Red
2007 Fattoria Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
nose: fairly plush on the nose with red fruits, berries, herbs and spice tones. Very good depth, but slightly ripe

taste: medium bodied with medium acidity. Plump feel with forward tones of red fruits, berries, and spice tones

overall: An excellent CCR. Is more forward and slightly ripe, but with good balance and depth on both the nose and palate

nose: very good depth and savory nose of licorice, black fruits, black cherries, spice tones and liquer

taste: plush medium/full body with good supporting tannins. Balanced with dark tones of licorice, black fruits, black cherries and liqueur tones

overall: This could use some age, but is pretty open right now. More plump than expected from the vintage with good dark tones on both the nose and palate

Red

89 points
nose: rich and fragrant nose of citrus, roasted nuts, pears, and warm dough tones. Well balanced, but lacking some depth

taste: balanced medium feel with nice supporting medium+ acidity. There is a nice roundness to the palate with tones of citrus, roasted nuts, some leesy tones, warm dough and some pears

overall: a very good NV. Well balanced and with a fatter take on the nose and palate.
White - Sparkling

overall: a real winner at the price. Very intriguing on the nose and the acidity is very mouth watering.
White - Sparkling

taste: very classy medium feel with medium+ acidity and crisp tones of almonds, hazelnuts, white fruits and mineral tones

overall: this is a really good NV. Well balanced with a real precision to it but with a classy side
White - Sparkling
N.V. Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Premier Cru Terre de Vertus France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
91 points
nose: very complex, but tight, nose of biscuits, dough, white fruits, and green apples. Good depth as well

taste: excellent depth with a very good medium feel and medium/high acidity that is very noticeable. Balanced with real good tones of minerals, biscuits, white fruits, and green apples

overall: This certainly needs a slight bit of age to it to fully settle down. There are some real good tones on both the nose and palate with the class being there for something good
White - Sparkling
2005 Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Grand Cru Vieille Vigne de Cramant France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
nose: very complex but tight nose with leesy tones, baked bread, almonds, white fruits, wet stones and loads of mineral tones

taste: there is some power behind this with a real good medium feel and very noticeable medium/high acidity. Balanced with real good tones of almonds, white fruits, wet stones, minerals and leesy tones

overall: this does need some time, but there is a lot to like about it. Well balanced with real good depth on both the nose and palate
Rosé - Sparkling

89 points
nose: nice and balanced nose of red cherries, berries, citrus tones, white fruits, and minerals

taste: well balanced medium/full feel with medium acidity. Good, but straightforward tones of red cherries, minerals, and berry tones

overall: a very good rose, but there is something just missing from this. Well balanced but fairly straightforward and not too complex

Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Chorey-les-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
87 points
nose: pretty tones of earth, spices, red fruits and some berry tones. Very good tones, but lacking a bit of depth

taste: very good medium feel with medium acidity and elegant tones of red fruits, spices, and earth tones

overall: If this had a bit more depth on the nose and palate it would be a wonderful wine. But, it's still very nice and a pretty beaune village wine
Red
2007 Domaine René Leclerc Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
nose: very good and straightforward nose of dark red fruits, spices, and dark red cherries

taste: medium bodied with very good medium acidity. Balanced with nice depth for a bourgogne and good tones of dark red fruits and spice tones

nose: well balanced with fat nose with tones of oranges, white fruits, and some white florals. Rather fresh with nice depth, but holding back a bit

taste: rich and full bodied with medium+ acidity that is very noticeable. Balanced with tones of oranges, white fruits, citrus tones, and some bits of white florals

88 points

taste: excellent and balanced medium feel with medium+ acidity. A bit shy on the palate with tones of citrus, fresh picked lemons and white fruits

overall: This is a nice white burg, but lacking some depth and complexity on both the nose and palate. Seems a bit shy right now, so a couple of years could do it well

90 points
nose: very well balanced nose with very good tones of pears, peaches, citrus tones, minerals, and a touch of florals

taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and well balanced tones of peaches, citrus tones, and minerals. Nice depth, but a little restrained right now with very noticeable acidity

taste: medium/full bodied with very noticeable medium+ acidity. Balanced with good depth and tones of white fruits, pears, and citrus tones

overall: Considering this producer, decanting is the best option. It does need some years, so hopefully it can do that before it meets a premox fate

2009 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheinhessen
90 points
nose: nice and fresh nose of citrus, mineral tones, white fruits and some pears. Well balanced with nice depth

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Nice tones of citrus, minerals and pears but lacking a bit on the mid-palate

91 points
nose: nice fresh and tart nose of green apples, pears, fig tones and nectarines. There is a fat quality on the nose that is very nice with some good depth as well

taste: very tasty lighter feel with medium+ acidity. Very well balanced with lighter (but not hollow) tones of green apples, pears, figs and a touch of white fruits

88 points
nose: lighter nose of pears, apples, white fruits and apricots. Lacking a slight bit of depth

overall: a decent wine. There is too much sulfur on the nose with decent tones on the palate
White - Off-dry

87 points
nose: nice and crisp nose of pears, white fruits, minerals, and citrus tones. Fragrant, but not that deep

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Well balanced with a real precision on the palate along with tones of crushed rocks, pears, wax, and apples

overall: this was an extremely interesting riesling. I liked the dry quality to it, but it was lacking some depth on both the nose and palate
