Introduction

We arrived near the end of the day so many producers were gone or had already finished pouring some of their top wines. So we only visited with a handful of producers, but overall 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin really stood out even in the context of this great overall vintage.

Flight 1 (30 notes)

Red
2010 Pierre Damoy Marsannay Les Longeroies France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasting. Black cherry aromas with spice hints. Red and black cherry on palate, very well textured. Easy to enjoy today. Very good Marsannay.
Red
2010 Pierre Damoy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Lots of ripe black fruit aromas. Dense and meaty on palate. Long tannic finish that is very firm but still charming, not coarse or rustic at all.
Red
2010 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Black fruit and liqueur aromas. Flavors of blackberry and plum with some rich braised meat character. Power unfolds on long finish.
Red
2010 Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting. Black fruit aromas and flavors with very charming spice. Dense and powerful, but simultaneously elegant and refined. Very impressive. 93-95 point potential to me today.
Red
2010 Pierre Damoy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Similar black fruit to the Beze just tasted, perhaps slightly less forward and accessible aromatically. Lush and enticing black fruit flavors with huge spice. Great power, explosive finish. Overall I slightly prefer this to the Beze for the long-term, this showed 94-96 point potential to me today.

Red
2008 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Slightly reductive today. Big fruit aromas, slightly more subtle on the palate. Firm tannins front-and-center today giving a slightly angular character. Good for its level, but I prefered its 2010 counterpart just tasted for long-term potential.
Red
2010 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Much like I remember from when tasted in Chicago last month. slightly floral with fresh and vibrant black cherry aromas. Great spice. Incredibly elegant and textured with great finesse. Very exciting wine.
Red
2010 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Also much like I recall from last month in Chicago. Classically Gevrey with black fruit, meaty character and an obvious animale element. Long, dense and powerful finish.
Red
2010 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. I liked this far more than when tasted last month in Chicago. Slightly floral start with bold black fruit providing an elegant start. Powerful black fruit dominates the middle with spice unfolding towards long, elegant finish. Very exciting wine for its potential in 15-20 years.
Red
2010 Geantet-Pansiot Marsannay Les Champs Perdrix France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasting. Fresh but simple black fruit on nose and palate. Moderate length and intensity.
Red
2010 Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey-Chambertin en Champs France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. All black fruit on palate, quit elush and ripe. Big and firmly structured with a dense, meaty and sauvage character. Good long-term potential for a Villages level wine, but slightly less refined than many other wines tasted today from Gevrey-Chambertin.
Red
2010 Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Dense black fruit to start with good background spice. Palate shows more spice and lots of every structural element to complement the good fruit. Lots of energy on finish. Could be a good value worth seeking out.
Red
2010 Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Also dense and slightly backward with a very traditional Gevrey animale character. Palate also dense, black and masculine with lots of power. Will need plenty of time.
Red
2008 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Earthy aromas to start with a sweet, spicy character. Black and blue fruit on palate with good herb flavors coming through in the middle. Moderate power and length.
Red
2008 Camille Giroud Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Red and black fruit aromas with modest fresh herbs. Palate showed more black fruit, but very elegant and well textured with silky tannins. Already beautifully balanced with great power emerging on long finish. Outstanding 93-94 point potential for me today.
Red
2010 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Very good aromatic start shows floral, spice and black fruit character. Simple on palate with mostly blakc fruit,, modest structure, slightly simple finish.
Red
2010 Domaine Humbert Frères Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Ripe black fruit with great spice aromas to start. Similar lush fruit on palate with sensational acidity, tannins and minerality,a ll in great harmony. Sensational raw material here, showing great (93-95 point) long-term potential today. Ever-so-slightly better than its 2009 counterpart also tasted here.
Red
2009 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Similar to when tasted late last year back in Chicago. Very ripe, but well supported with big structural elements. Definitely preferred this 2009 over its 2010 counterpart also just tasted.
Red
2009 Domaine Humbert Frères Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Ripe black cherry aromas with some liqueur hints. Palate is also big, lush and fat. Very alluring, but I prefer the amazing 2010 vintage also just tasted.
Red
2010 Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Champ Pennebaut France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
Tasting. Ripe and balanced black fruit. A very well done Fixin that really made me sorry Mortet didn't have any more of his Gevrey cuvees to taste so late in the afternoon.
Red
2010 Domaine Denis Mortet Marsannay Les Longeroies France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasting. Ripe but vibrant red fruit aromas. Wonderful fruit flavors for its level with modest spice and very good balance. Often one of my favorite wines from Marsannay, this 2010 certainly doesn't disappoint.
Red
2010 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasting. Big black fruit but somewhat backward today. A lot of substance here, but time is required.
Red
2009 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay L'Ancestrale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasted. Tried immediately after Pataille's equally sensational 2010 l'Ancestrale, I think this might be the best "one-two" combo I have ever tried from Marsannay. Ripe black fruit with a charming perfume. Palate has the same intense, powerful, sauvage black fruit character with great concentration. 92-93 points for me today.

Red
2010 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay L'Ancestrale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
Tasting of barrel sample. Perfumed and spice-drive nose with lots of fresh black fruit. Palate shows incredible concentration and power from start-to-finish, yet great balance and nuance. Long and energetic. Tasted just before the also great 2009 l'Ancestrale.
Red
2008 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Black fruit, hint of oak, with a forest character. Moderate black fruit flavors come through with a classic, meaty Gevrey character, everything in excellent harmony today. Very good for its level.
Red
2009 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Ripe black fruit aromas and flavors with some good spice hints from fruit and oak. Lush and concentrated, I slightly preferred the clarity and precision of the 2008 just tasted.
Red
2008 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Much like I remember from last month at La Paulee in SF, this has lots of black fruit, well complemented with structure and energy.
Red
2009 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Ripe black fruit with good supporting spice. Very good balance and length for a Villages wine. I have a slight preference for this vintage of Marc Roy Clos Prieur vs. its 2008 counterpart also just tasted (as opposed to the Gevrey VV, for which I preferred the 2008).
Red
2010 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel-Air France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting. Good mix of red and black fruit aromas. Palate more black fruit, well supported and lengthened by excellent acidity and fine tannins. Another very impressive and long 2010 Gevrey for its level.
Red
2010 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Mazoyères-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting. Black fruit aromas with good spice and a slight floral background note. Lush and powerful blackberry and black cherry, with great structural support and balance that already give it a regal, elegant character. Although I don't have a lot of experience with Taupenot-Maume wines, I will definitely look for this at release. 93-94 point potential for me today.
