The Ledbury, London

Tasted October 18, 2012 by Rupert with 518 views

Flight 1 - with amuse (quail's egg in kataifi pastry) (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1990 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne
95 points
Very fine, lacy textured, rich, refined, and yet bursting with energy, showing few signs of age. Brilliant

Flight 2 - with Scottish scallops, sweetcorn and lemon grass (3 notes)

White
1969 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
87 points
Dark, butterscotch nose, smooth, drinkable with vague appley fruit, but no oomph. (i hadn't realised I'd had this before, but my note from six years ago is almost identical)
White
2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Tight, powdery minerals on the palate, fine limey acidity, a lick of toasty oak, lovely chiselled wine
White
2001 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
95 points
Gold, a bit of funk which blew off, and then a glorious, smooth, richly nutty wine, mouthfilling, persistent, harmonious.

Flight 3 - with neck of lamb, baby carrots, rosemary curd and figs (4 notes)

Red
1991 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
The sommelier thought this out of condition, but no one round the table had a problem with it. Tight, fresh, with a minty tone, then a bit spirity, with a cherry liqueur quality. Attractive.
Red
1990 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Some earth on the nose, riper than the 91, more depth, more breadth, young, fresh and grippy
Red
1985 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Rounder, more red fruited, smoky coffee on the nose, showing some sweet fruit at the core and broader than the two preceding wines - this is gorgeous
Red
1983 Domaine Pernot-Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Another smoky nose, another grippy wine, linear after the 85, dusty, but fine.

Flight 4 - with roast poachard, cèpes, truffles and beetroot (3 notes)

Red
1980 Domaine Pernot-Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Another one that the sommelier questioned, perhaps because of the medicinal tone to the nose, which I found edgy, fresh and bracing and behind it was sweet red fruit, very pinot, gently gorgeous
Red
1979 Domaine Pernot-Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Smelled tannic, perhaps a bit musty, but smoky, grippy, I ended up liking this a lot for its freshness
Red
1976 Domaine Pernot-Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Rich, warm, smoky bacon in there along with the cherry liqueur fruit. Delightful

Flight 5 - with passion fruit soufflé and sauternes ice cream (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
89 points
Waxy nose, sweet oaky fruit on the palate, decent acidity, nice mid-weight sauternes
