Introduction

There were a lot of people missing, so I was invited to the 2003 Bordeaux retro that was being hosted by Bill. All of the wines were blind and were done in one flight.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White
2003 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Nose: There is a creaminess to the nose with upfront tones of marmalade, meyer lemons, quince, and some toasty notes too. There is decent depth with a forward quality to it.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/low acidity. The palate is a bit flabby, but there are good tones of marmalade, meyer lemons, orange peels, and some toast tones.

Overall: This was a bit hard to identify blind. While it should've been expected, it was hard to tell that it was a bordeaux blanc blind as it seemed somewhat like a Chardonnay.
White
2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Nose: The nose is wide open with robust tones of sweet peaches, nectarines, pears, melons, some buttered toast, and orange blossoms.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is very good with creamier tones of sweet peaches, nectarines, buttered toast, orange blossoms, and some pears.

Overall: This seems to be drinking as well as it can. There was a forward quality to it and a larger size as well with good depth.

Flight 2 (11 notes)

Red
2003 Falesco Umbria Marciliano Italy, Umbria
86 points
Nose: Rich and forward nose with tones of dark red fruits, cedar, dark berries, and some spicebox tones. This has decent depth, but it doesn't show much character.

Taste: Medium bodied with harder tannins and medium/low acidity. There are balanced tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, spice box tones and some liqueur. The mid-palate is lacking a bit and the finish is a bit clipped.

Overall: This was the first blind wine and it was my no.9. It was the least of the wines that weren't corked or shut down and it came off as a mid-range st. emilion.
Red
2003 Clos Fourtet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Nose: The nose is very perfumed with aromatic tones of red berries, floral tones, dark red cherries, spice tones, some wet clay, and hints of coffee grounds. There is very good depth and the tones aren't too rich, but are well balanced.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice youthful tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it isn't overpowering with silky and polished tones of red berries, spices, floral tones, dark red cherries, and a touch of leather and coffee grinds.

Overall: This was my no.3 wine. This was showing some real poise and being somewhat ready to drink. It could certainly use some more time, but this is an extremely good wine right now.
Red
2003 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Nose: Very forward nose with richer tones of asian spices, red fruits, cherries, liqueur, black cherries, and some road tar tones. There is good depth to this and it seems fairly open.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins along with medium acidity. The structure is certainly there, but not overpowering along with richer tones of red fruits, licorice, cedar, liqueur, and some road tar on the back end.

Overall: This was my no.6. It was on the chunkier side and showed dark fruit to it. It wasn't overdone, but it wasn't very expressive right now either.
Red
2003 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
89 points
Nose: There is a forwardness to the nose with tones of dark red fruits, cedary oak, black cherries, and some wood spices. This was lacing a slight bit of character, but it had decent depth.

Taste: Medium bodied with chewier tannins. The structure is showing the youth with tones of dark red fruits, black cherries, currants, and some wood spices. The oak isn't as prominent on the palate as there is more of a dark red fruit core.

Overall: This was my no.7. I was a bit surprised when it was revealed. This lacked margaux character, but was still a very good wine. It does need some more time to hopefully reveal some more.
Red
2003 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
This bottle just wasn't giving up much. The tannins were thrashing on the palate as well. I even tried it at the end of the tasting and it was still tight as a rock. This was my no.10 based on it not being a fully flawed bottle.

Red
2003 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Nose: There is a perfumed quality to the nose with balanced tones of cedar, red berries, cranberries, herbs, spice box tones, red florals, and some crushed rocks. There is good depth to this with real good elegance and style.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with big and gripping tannins. This is very young and the structure is imposing. Even with the youthful structure, there are elegant tones of cedar, bell peppers, spice box, crushed rocks, and dark red cherries.

Overall: This was my no.4. There is a lot of promise to this still and it needs more time. The nose is better developed and there is good depth on the whole.

2003 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
94 points
Nose: Very deep and pungent nose with well balanced tones of cedar, dark red cherries, violets, spice box tones, tobacco, and some leather. There is very good power behind this too with some layering.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with good gripping tannins. Even though the structure is showing the youth of the wine there are still deep tones of pencil lead, cedar, black currants, leather, and some kirsch with dark red cherries as well.

Overall: This was my no.1. I was absolutely shocked when this was revealed. I actually thought this may have been a Pichon Baron as there was a good amount of power behind it.

2003 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
This was terribly corked. It just reeked and was a bummer. This was obviously my last place bottle, no.11.
Red
2003 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Nose: This was wound a bit tight, but there were deep and richer tones of dark red fruits, cedar, tobacco, black cherries, and some kirsch. The pedigree of the wine is there, but it took a few go's to get everything.

Taste: Medium bodied with very chewy tannins. The tannins were overpowering and the youth is very apparent, but there are really good tones of dark red fruits, tobacco, cedar, black cherries, and spice box tones.

Overall: This was my no.5. This bottle was just extremely young and wasn't ready for prime time. I can't wait to see where this is down the road when it's actually ready.

2003 Château Duhart-Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Nose: The nose is a bit angular with some rich tones of coffee beans, black currants, kirsch, oak, and black cherries. This is also lacking some depth, but the tones aren't entirely surface tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with some hard tannins. The feel is a bit coarse with tones of coffee beans, black currants, kirsch, wood spices, and oak tones.

Overall: This was my no.8. This bottle came off on the harder side to where it would is hard to tell if it will ever come together.

2003 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
Nose: The nose is very perfumed with tones of red fruits, cherries, spices, floral tones, liqueur, cedar, and some campfire smoke. There is very good depth to this with an elegant touch as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with sneaky, but firm tannins. The tannins seem to bite more on the back end with silky tones of red fruits, cherries, liqueur, currants, floral tones, and some fresh picked berries.

Overall: This was my no.2. This was a very pleasant surprise and it showed extremely well. I would like to see where this is in another 5-8 years.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
91 points
Nose: There is a very succulent quality to the nose with tones of sweet nectarines, pears, caramel, candied apples, and some apricots. There is good depth to this along with good balance.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. There is very good balance and a fatness to the tones of sweet nectarines, caramel, candied apples, with some apricots and peaches.

Overall: This is really good right now. There is a fatness to this with a good succulent side as well.

Closing

The wines were all over the place, but on the whole they were very good, albeit still quite young. A lot of these still need more time like one would expect from 10 year-old bordeaux.
