Introduction

This was put together in about 24 hours and proved to be a really nice event with 10 in attendance. I love it when a plan comes together!

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
90 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Very nice, pear citrus, a bit of strawberry, minerals. The palate is consistent, clean, defined, elegant. 90+ pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Pale gold color. Lovely nose with lime, citrus, green apple, yeast, floral. The palate is very bright and lifted, very good energy, lime, lemon, apple, minerals, yeast. Very clean and a long finish. This was my #3 WOTN and group #4 by a point. 92+pts.
White - Off-dry
2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Light medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. I enjoyed this as usual, but it was just a hair short of previous bottles. Moderate fusil, lime, tart, lemon, mineral. The palate was consistent, and was drinking more kabinett like tonight.
White
2008 Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
flawed
Unfortunately this was bad. Very burnt on the palate, burnt rubber, sharp.
White
2000 Mestre-Michelot Meursault Sous La Velle France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
87 points
Medium dark yellow color. PNP. Followed 1 glass over an hour. Very disappointing showing after the last bottle being completely oxidized. This was drinkable, but hardly the wine from the first bottle. Minerals, nutty, oak, lemon, did get a bit better in the glass, but still lacked fruit on the palate. Mildly oxidized.
White
2010 Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was pretty introverted on the nose and rather disjointed on the palate initially. It did improve considerably in glass and was more reminiscent of what I expect from this wine. The nose was superior to the palate, lemon, lemon peel, tropical notes emerge after a half hour. The palate is medium bodied, citrus, just a hint of butter, light tropical fruits, toasted, light oak, nice medium finish emerges after being bitter and sharp.
Red
2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
93 points
Medium dark red color, a bit cloudy. PNP, with aeration in glasses. Drank 1 glass over 1.5hrs. This was lovely as usual showing the typical damp earth, floral, cherry, strawberry nose. The palate was elegant, earthy, velvety, with cherry and berry fruit, deeply layered and long on the finish. 93+ pts tonight. My and group #2 WOTN.
Red
2003 Clos Dubreuil France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Very dark purple/inky color. Splashed into decanter and back into bottle and poured with aeration. Drank 1 glass over 1.5hrs. Wow, this was a blockbuster right out of the gate, the nose is explosive, blueberry cobbler, blackberry pie, creme de cassis, roses, leather, tobacco. The palate is rich and concentrated, deeply layered black fruits that are ripe, but not jammy, smoke, leather, crushed rocks, tobacco, spice, fine grained tannins. this is smooth, long, and elegant with that power and grace that impresses all the way around. Landslide WOTN. 94+ pts. Drink or hold.

Red
2006 Rubicon Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Cask USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
91 points
Very dark red color. Splash decanted and back with aeration from bottle. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Very nice nose with cassis, black cherry, blackberry, vanilla, coffee, oak, and dust. The palate was medium-full bodied, maybe not showing as much mid palate, consistent notes from the nose, a bit more oak on the palate. Tannins are round, medium plus finish. I'm not quite sure where this is going right now, it may not be a long term cellar candidate, but it should be good for at least 3-4 years.

1995 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for about 2 hours. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. I could just copy my last note from December of '12 because this was a carbon copy of the bottle, The nose was lovely, but the palate did not improve any with decanting. It was the same on PNP and after 2 hours in the decanter plus in glass time. (10/18/12 note: Very dark red color. Another bottle with no decant. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. I was really looking forward to trying this, but sadly was disappointed. I'm a huge fan of Pontet-Canet in general, certainly over the last decade anyway. This bottle presented as austere, tannic, black fruits, anise, oak, gravelly mineral, spice. Not sure this will get a lot better. I'd like to see the impact of a significant decant, but this did not improve a lot in the glass.) So FWIW, I think this is what it is and what it will be, drink up.
White - Sweet/Dessert

This just keeps blowing me away.

Closing

The hands down WOTN was the 2003 Clos Dubreuil (3+3+3+3+3+3+3+2+2=25pts)
#2 WOTN: 2007 St. Inocent White Rose (2+2+2+2+2=10pts.)
#3 WOTN: 2006 Inglenook Cask Cabernet (2+2+2+1+1=9pts)
#4 WOTN: N/V Vilmart Grand Cellier Champagne (2+1+1+1+1+1+1=8pts)
The voting was done before the 2005 Clos Jean or it would have been in the mix as well.
