Introduction

Tonight's theme was Piemonte reds. We did 3 flights of 4 wines each, all tasted blind.

Flight 1 - Barbarescos (4 notes)

Wines are listed in order of group preference. My preference was 1) La Spinetta, 2) Marchse di Gresy, 3) Cigliuti, 4) Paitin.

Red
2005 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barbaresco Vürsù Vigneto Gallina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
95 points
Tasted blind. Dark and brooding, with a brambly character. You can definitely smell the wood on this one. Impressive, silky texture with a backbone of fine tannins. Super well balanced, and extremely elegant.
Red
2008 Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
Tasted blind. Smoky nose, with earth and leather. Bigger style body, still in the earthy vein though. Huge structured tannins and nice long length on the finish. Lots of acid, too, though I found it overall a bit disjoint at this stage. A very powerful wine that should hopefully come around with time.
Red
2008 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga Gaiun Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
Tasted blind. Sweet cherry, wood spice, and leather on the nose. Medium plus body backed by red fruits and dried cherries. The mid-palate gives way to medium tannins, that trail off with great length and balanced acidity.
Red
2009 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
flawed
Tasted blind. Nose: sweet cherry, a hint of green/menthol, and some heat. Light/medium body with some red fruit, and present fine tannins. Finishes with a lot of acid. I think this bottle was flawed; after a while, I got hints of TCA on the body (but not the nose), it kind of tasted like damp newspapers.

Flight 2 - Barolos (4 notes)

Wines are listed in order of group preference. My preference was 1) Marchesi di Barolo, 2) Pira Via Nuova, 3) Aldo Conterno, 4) Gaja.

Red
2006 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Tasted blind. Nose: dark fruit and dried flowers. Subtle and elegant; pretty, even. Rich and full bodied, with lots of red/black fruit, soft tannin, and excellent balance. Altogether quite a nice package!
Red
2008 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Via Nuova Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Tasted blind. Warm spice and wood on the nose, yet it's still quite pretty. I get lots of brown sugar mixed with red fruit on the weighty body. Finishes with fine tannins and nice balance. I think there's a bit of sweetness there, too.

Red
2008 Gaja Barolo Dagromis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted blind. I was not a fan of this in our lineup, at least compared to the others we tasted against it. It came across as funky on the nose, and thin and tart on the body. Perhaps a bad bottle?
Red
2008 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Tasted blind. Spice and dried flowers on the nose. A bit high toned. Medium-plus body with rich red fruit and soft/mild tannins, though a bit too much acid. Definitely needs some food to go along with it!

Flight 3 - Vineyard Designates (4 notes)

Wines are listed in order of group--and my--preference.

Red
2008 Fratelli Revello Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Tasted blind. Sweet, red, juicy fruit -- this is one ripe wine. That great fruit carries through to the body, as well, but the richness is balanced out by lots of acid and medium tannin. Really nice.
Red
2007 Marziano Abbona Barolo Vigneto Terlo Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Tasted blind. Dark fruit and earth. Full bodied, with rich, fine tannin and crazy length on the finish. Definitely lots of acid, but seemingly in balance with the big body.
Red
2009 Vietti Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Tasted blind. Still quite tight and tart at this point on the nose. Full bodied, and quite elegant with a nice purity. Finishes with fine tannins and lots of acid.

2008 Elio Altare Barolo Arborina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tasted blind. Nose: strawberry, balsamic, sweet fruit. Huge acid. A bit short on the mid-palate, but good length on the finish.
