TTWG Produttori Blind

Casa di Rosso

Tasted May 22, 2014 by indiscriminate palate with 345 views

Introduction

Wines were double-blind, and no one was able to place these as Produttori, or even Piedmont. The wines were shut down tight, but most showed a lot of promise, perhaps even in my lifetime.

Flight 1 - Starter (blind) (1 note)

Rosé
2013 Château Saint Cyrgues Costières-de-Nîmes Cuvée Anna France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes
Floral, red-fruited, quite dry; pleasant, but not remarkable. Good.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Pronounced nose of kirsch, sweet cherries, and herbs; very rich and thick mouthfeel due to the coating and dominating tannin. As will be the theme for the evening, this is shut down tight.

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Very interesting, quite pronounced nose, very herbal. Silky mouthfeel, slightly green (pleasantly), fairly fine but very very plentiful tannin. This was the group's wine of the night, and the nose alone is worth it. Like the others tonight, this needs time, but may be approachable sooner than the others.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Fruity and slightly minty; very high tannin and a bit of bitterness on the finish. Seems a bit hot. This was my least favorite of the Produttori wines tonight as it was unbearably tannic and somewhat disjointed.
Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
The nose was primarily red-fruited but also showed some savory characteristics that the other Produttori wines did not. Continuing with the theme, this had high tannin. A kirsch sweetness on the finish.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Very silky mouthfeel with herbal and cherry notes, but was not showing a lot as it is shut down tight right now.
Red
2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Lose this in the very back of the cellar for a long time. Very sweet fruit on the palate, but a ridiculous amount of tannin.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Acclivi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
This was fairly consistent with my one other experience with Burlotto: sweet, candied, and hot. Uggh.
Red
2008 Silvio Grasso Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Very pretty cherry on the nose and palate, with a good deal of funk. Tannins kept in check, making this potentially approachable now. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Flight 6 - Closing wine (non-blind) (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Pronounced nose of stone and tropical fruit, spice. Fairly light, slightly chalky mouthfeel. Very high botrytis and high acid. Very nice.
