Grands Jours de Bourgogne 2014 Day 5: Volnay and Meursault, Corton 3-21-14

Tasted June 13, 2014 by Gargantua with 994 views

Introduction

There were other tasting events and appellations, but one can only do so much....

Flight 1 (76 notes)

White
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Nose shows just the tiniest slightly dirty washrag; palate has honey and "gras", nice acid, would be very good if not for the oxidative finish that marred it to my palate
White
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Palate has sweet lemon tea; gras; very nice! Nose has that strange linden tree pollen aroma going on a bit. A fave from Lafon today
White
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Nose showed a dirty cedar and celery seed atop a stunning white Burg. Palate follows with celery seed, not for me. Chalk it up to 2011 greenies.
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault Les Tillets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Not yet bottled. Lighter watered down lemon tea attack, bitumen a bit, good acid: tight
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault En La Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Not yet bottled. Match struck nose; palate is big and round, very piquant acid finish.
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Blagny France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Uncertain that the wine I tasted was 1er cru, but whatevs: not yet bottled. Very dilute attack, effusive. Big round palate entry, asphalty tiny bit on the attack, more lemon tea on the finish
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Not yet bottled. Big tire and lemon nose, more grip, more fullness; yum! These wines are all very lean.
White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Bottled 10 days ago. Nose is an OMFG gorgeous mineral lemon. Palate is diffuse and round, then denser on finish.

White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault En Luraule France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bottled 10 days ago. Goutte d'or just next door. Nose is gorgeous, palate is round then saccharine then acid.
White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault Les Narvaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bottled 10 days ago. Nose is an OMFG; palate is voluptuous spring water. A winner. These wines are bonkers. Screw Roulot, this is where it's at; acid, lean precision
White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault Les Chevalières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bottled 10 days ago. Geez, this is great, but in no way the equivalent of the Narvaux.
White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Le Poruzot-Dessus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Bottled 10 days ago. Dilute attack, acid finish, bright chalky mineral finish
White
2012 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Bottled 10 days ago. Another wow nose. Palate shows lemon tea with acid and slight bitumen/match stick. Sneaky acid. So very impressed with Rémi Jobard's wines. These are my new must have faves. Mikulski's pulling a faraway second; Roulot's overpriced.
White
2012 Domaine François Mikulski Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Bottled in Feb. Alluring caper/chalk/peanut nose; mineral, lovely!
White
2012 Domaine François Mikulski Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bottled in Feb. Lean with big power. Nose is a lovely acid lemon; palate framed in perfect acid, lemon and chalky shells. A winner.
White
2012 Domaine François Mikulski Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Bottled in Feb. Effusive nose? Gentle acid lemon. Palate has an elegant acid, lemon confit, and a chalky acid finish. Very good.
White
2011 Pierre Morey Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Nose is funky with sweet blue cheese and acid--then goes Nutrasweet Countrytime lemonade; palate is nice but too round/hollow? Hard to judge on this busy day.
White
2011 Pierre Morey Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Strange entry, but ended up being a fave chez Pierre Morey today: another effusive, strange nose--old wood, tiny bit of Pledge, graphite? 2011 ladybug taint? Tough to assess. Then very different on palate! Good acid, dense lemon and chalk, actually very good!
White
2009 Morey-Blanc Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Bran chex and lemon custard nose. This wine is not for me.
Red
2012 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Bottled 15 days ago. A very masculine wine. Dark fruit, smoke, very pretty! Clay.
Red
2012 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Bottled 15 days ago. A more feminine iteration of Volnay. Jammy blood orange, lighter weight, rust? tire? elegant!
Red
2011 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Airy finish, chalky, lovely! Smoky tea.
White
2012 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Clos du Cromin France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bottled in Feb. Big, round, almost chicken broth savory palate, lemon saline character. Elegant!
White
2011 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Wow! Round, elegant, amazing! Flea collar aromas and salinity. This is an example of what I call the "diffuse/watery" style of Meursault at its best.
Red
2011 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nose is cedary; palate candied, astringent: no!
Red
2011 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nose has a diaper-y, rusty thing going on, palate is supple and a bit candied.
Red
2011 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nose reminds me of fresh button mushrooms, palate is a touch more spring water vs previous reds, but still not too good in my book.
Red
2012 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Bitter tea; tight; acerbic, roses somewhere in there
Red
2012 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nose is like some sort of assy, chocolate musk; finally, on the palate, here is a decent wine among the lineup. Plum and Ceylon, major acid--may become very good
White
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Bourgogne-Aligoté Raisins Dorés France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
Wow! Here's the best aligoté doré from Lafarge I've tasted yet! Fleshy, with acid and a toasty honey and freshness! Very pleasantly surprised!
Red
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Nose is cedar; palate not bad at all; a nice balance of supple texture and bitterness and smokey tart cherry. Tough now but promising. Finishes in a rose bush...
Red
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nose is cedar. Palate is tighter vs Vdg Selec; more acid, somehow less promising to my palate at this juncture than Vdg Selec?! At least at this point. This will be a long-lived wine, so: I'm sure I'll be proved wrong at some point down the line!
Red
2012 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
20 days in bottle. 30% new oak. Such a dark color! Nose is an OMFG, roses over delicate fruit jam; palate continues with a floral inflected jam, WOW, astringent but omfg. Smoky black cherry jam.
Red
2012 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
20 days in bottle. 30% new oak. Another huge wow nose. Assy musk over big cool character jam. Palate is dense but fresh spring water over a thick jam laden with white flowers. Skunky in the best sense. 2.48ha--pretty big relatively. Total destem. 3 total sorts, 1 machine.
Red
2012 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
20 days in bottle. 30% new oak. OMFG doesn't begin to describe this wine; it's pretty much perfect. 2.414ha. Total destem. 3 total sorts, 1 machine. Palate is an impossible to spit fruit and rose concoction. I so eagerly await this and the previous wines' arrival to NY mkt. A must (no pun...)
White
2012 Domaine Bertagna Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Not in bottle. Oak certainly present, and acid balance, big, apricot and white flower, apple compote, 13.5 brings heat to finish
Red
2012 Domaine Bertagna Corton-Les Grandes Lolières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Not in bottle. Oak on nose but a tactile softness on nose, vinyl blueberry, cedar bite on palate with heavy fruit in reserve, will be great
Red
2012 Bonneau du Martray Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
A regal charmer. Wow. Smoky, noble old wood. Roses, blueberry jam, austere but still pretty awesome. Highly recommend.
White
2012 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Struck match on nose. Green mineral; chalk, lovely. Green pollen, play doh aroma. A unique, regal wine. Granny smith apple character. Jean-Charles left me with the haunting image of the entire team finally heading out to inspect the hail damage. "No one dared speak a single word. You just knew, you couldn't pronounce a single word...."
White
2012 Domaine Maurice et Anne-Marie Chapuis Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
30% new oak. Nose offers a rich pollen, then becomes effusive. Palate follows with pollen, some tiny latex and green aromas, quite reserved just now; hints of apple & caper?
Red
2012 Bruno Colin Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose is savage and dark, some cedar, palate is austere with a watery attack--lacking fruit? Tea. My colleague liked it; I cared less for it.
Red
2012 Edmond Cornu & Fils Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Not as tight and foreboding as I'd've imagined from this house that makes vins de garde. Concentrated but fine tea; stemmy flowers, pollen, tannins and acid on finish alongside roses.
White
2012 Pierre André au Château de Corton André Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Too much oak! Very bâtonnage, supple, but where's the mineral component?! Still: very alluring.
White
2012 Domaine des Croix Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
wow! perfect round, regal apple with wood spice, sneaky acid. Not yet bottled. Very promising. Chalky nose.
Red
2012 Domaine des Croix Corton-La Vigne au Saint France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose shows a tiny bit of peanut, only Méo and Latour alongside him in this vineyard. Nose has cedar, cotton candy, palate has a bite; thin, but good acid; lacks heft/matière?
Red
2012 Domaine des Croix Corton-Grèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose shows a tiny bit of rust, palate seems simplistic? Bite, some cherry/wild strawberry jam, slight tire on accumulative finish, gains with time and accumulation. A subtle wine.
White
2012 Denis Pere & Fils Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Nose shows B vitamin, steel, apple compote; palate shows a bit of oak but nice acid and cut, little in the mineral dept but leaner and more desirable than many CCs tasted today, very good. 35% new oak worn well.
Red
2012 Denis Pere & Fils Corton-Les Paulands France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose is leaner, cool water jam of crab apple and cherries, nice, roses and graphite, very good, floral, a winner
White
2012 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Correct oak on nose; lovely clear and bright--pure water and fresh applesauce. Palate has a nice acid on attack to wipe away the applesauce heft, nice mineral prick on finish
Red
2012 Joseph Drouhin Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
(A blend of Clos du Roi and Bressandes. Doesn't get much better than that). Nose shows brown plum, stemmy green? Struck match. Skunky. My type of aromas, but candied plum and palate hurts a bit?
White
2012 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
50% new oak. A royal apple nose translates onto palate, gets to a barely oxidative finish, very good! Still in cask.
Red
2012 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose is reticent, wispy, tight. Palate shows red currants and graphite. 1 month in bottle.
Red
2012 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Wow! Such cool, suave fruit on nose! Palate shows red currants and graphite--still austere. 1 month in bottle.
Red
2012 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose of vinyl and blueberry jam. Biting young, more oak here? Palate shows a blueberry tea! Lovely! 1 month in bottle.
White
2012 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Nose has polleny, ripe fruit, still with a sense of restraint. Some applesauce but more dry extract here and acid. Still round on attack, with acid in tow. These are very grown-up wines. Christine is serious. They'll live a very long time.
White
2012 Domaine Follin-Arbelet Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Trippy green gummy bear nose. Palate round with honey, greenness.
Red
2012 Domaine Follin-Arbelet Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Hardcore mocha nose. Bottled 15-18 days ago. Palate is big and ripe but acid and round, more mocha....
Red
2012 Domaine Follin-Arbelet Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Wow! Yum! A winner! Tea, blueberry jam, very noble and spring water pure. Dark cherry.
Red
2012 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Corton Le Rognet et Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
10% new oak. Nose is beautiful with a fresh fruit that rushes to the nose! But no syrupy heft here--thin, like pure spring water, forest pine needles, wild strawberry, jam in tow. Palate shows watery acid, vinyl, strawberry jam, red currant residuals.
White
2012 Antonin Guyon Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
13.5%. Nose of stemmy applesauce. Palate somewhat regal, watery applesauce. Nice! Bottled 15 days ago
White
2012 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
30% new oak. Bottled 3 weeks ago. Very oaky, insecticide nose. Palate big ripe cinnamon applesauce, pretty taste, if huge.
Red
2012 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Huge plummy jam fruit on nose, palate is more respectable; drying tannins and acid, remains fruit-driven though. Tight, smoked plum jam finish.
Red
2012 Louis Jadot Corton-Grèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose shows vinyl and plum. Palate is far more austere vs Pougets. These wines were poured far too cold.
Red
2012 Domaine Michel Juillot Corton-Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose has a nice funky, assy cherry, gets green over thick fruit.
White
2012 Domaine Michel Juillot Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Regal applesauce oaky nose, palate shows oak, fat a bit, somewhat conventional? Very good, classic CC. Bit of stem on the finish?
White
2012 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Bottled 8 days ago. Palate shows a browning applesauce, but lovely freshness, restraint. 30-35% new oak.
Red
2012 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose is a savage greenish forest, burly! Palate slightly acerbic entry, tense, clay, will be great.
Red
2012 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Big, dense fruit, nice bitter acid to close, bitter; very good, tea and tiny bit of heat on finish, vineyard is quick-draining limestone.
Red
2012 Domaine Nudant Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Oooh! Skunky nose! Assy chocolate musk! Palate is astringent but wild strawberry jam. Bressandes always has a savage character. I like Bressandes. Takes 4-5 years for the stems to integrate. The big question at harvest is: "Are the stems ripe?"
White
2012 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Nose: YES! FINALLY a mineral Corton Charlie at this damned tasting! Everything else is just oaky applesauce! Palate shows a saccharine apple yogurt, watery but full of spiky minerality. Finishes with pricks of acid, tiniest slight latex. My favorite Corton Charlie tasted today, and I'd've never guessed it'd've come from this unknown producer.
Red
2012 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose like a powdered strawberry fruit packet drink, freshness, cool character, savage jam and tart cherry
Red
2012 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Corton-Les Hautes Mourottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Wow nose; savage, wild strawberry, pebbles, acid, roses. Very, very impressed with these wines today
White
2012 Domaine Rollin Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Nose of big oak, almost insecticide; palate is a surprise--nice calm apple. 50% new oak. Needs 4, 5 yrs
Red
2012 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Corton-Rognet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Nose shows a big wine with an assy musk, big ripe Pinot Noir fruit, and stemmy forest. Palate is stemmy over dense unripe plum jam, tea and flowers. Quite nice. Bottled 15 days ago. 30% new oak.
Red
2012 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Stewed fruit. Nope, no way. Cali-style wine. What is the problem at Tollot-Beaut?!

White
2012 Domaine Michel Voarick Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
In bottle since November? Palate has a gentle acid, diffuse attack, seems too round? lacking midpalate weight, prob shut down.
