Introduction

Our virgin experience with Mourvèdre from Bandol.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2007 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Blanc USA, California
92 points
Tasted blind. Slow-oxed in bottle over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of intense nutty buttery toasted oak. Initially some petroleum notes which blew off. Also developed a distinct coconut aroma. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium- acidity, high alcohol (14.6%), full body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of nutty buttery toasted oak, coconut, honey, ripe apricots, cantaloupe, minerality, and bit of spice. Mouth-feel a little oily and on hindsight - like beeswax. Long finish.
Complex wine with a bit of everything, but my gripe is too much alcohol.
Very good quality. Can drink now, and suitable for further ageing 3-5 years.
64% Roussanne and 36% Grenache Blanc.
Red
2009 Vietti Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
92 points
Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, vanilla, cream milk, and underlying dark plums. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol, soft medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavor intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, vanilla, dark plums, blackberries. Oak dominant with dark fruits being vague and restrained. Medium+ finish.
I guessed a Rioja Reserva.
Very good quality Barbera. Elegant and nice drinking now when young. I think this needs another 2-3 years for the oak to better integrate, but lacks the fruits to go for extended ageing.
Day 2: Oak receded and fruits much more apparent - dark plums, blackberries, black cherries. Hmm maybe this Barbera really needs some age to shine.

Red
2006 Domaine du Gros 'Noré Bandol France, Provence, Bandol
91 points
Aired in decanter for an hour and drank over 3 hours. Coarse sediments left in bottle (unfiltered during winemaking process).
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of tar, leather, rubber, and intermittent barnyard. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (15%), very velvety and furry (think stroking a short-haired cat) high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of tar, leather, rubber, barnyard, earth, and some bloody ferrous minerality. The fruit was really taking a backseat here, or maybe even sleeping in the boot. Glimpses of dark fruit - blackberry and blueberry, nothing more. Long finish.
Very good quality. This is not ready to drink now. Keep this animal for another 5 years at least.
80% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache, 5% Cinsault.
