Introduction

To celebrate E&R's 15th year in existence, the event was actually suppose to be 15 vintages, but I guess they decided to add one to grow on. Amazing how well everything showed for me today... usually it's hard to get a proper impression with this many wines, but everything was very impressive to my palate. Incredibly consistent.

Flight 1 - Hermitage Rouge (9 notes)

Red
2011 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very rich aromas. Spicy tar, and a nice acidic attack. Pretty and quite intense. Very rich and lush palate texture. Tart, with impressive intensity and acid. Huge round texture. Wonderful eruption of pretty acidity. A very pretty wine throughout.

Soft, beautiful aromas, but more subtle than the 2011. With focus there's some deep intensity there. Really rich on palate entry, with smooth texture. Some nice attack on the palate, but feeling a little shut on flavor. Soft, rich acidity on the finish. Tart and puckerig, a little bitter and quite strong. Some alcoholic spice.

Tons of sediment in the glass. Very steamy and sharp aromas. It smells thick and pruney... there's some tartness there, but the overall aromatic complexion is a bit dark for my tastes. Soft palate entry and incredibly creamy in texture. Moderate to light acidity and tannins. It's rich and deep, with some acid building as its held in the mouth, which helps cover some of that dark intensity. Nice and rich finish but incredibly largely fruited. Very soft and smooth, but a strong dial up of acid after you swallow. Thick notes, that certainly come across a little more mature than I'd like for a wine this young. Overall, for me, the heat of the year was too much for this wine.

Really funky aromas, perhaps bretty. Smells rather musty. Palate is rich and creamy again, with light acid and some more mature notes here too, getting some candied fruit as its held in the mouth. Spice on the finish with a rich dial up of acid. Really quite rich, acidic stuff. Seems a little on the tertiary side.

Some candied berry aromas, but pretty mellow, with some stale burnt marshmallow note, too. Nicely aged fruit on the palate, third tier, but actually as its held in the mouth and aerated the fruit gets fresher. Really nice candied fruit and pretty acidity the longer its held in the mouth. More voluminous acidity on thee puckering finish. Really pretty and open today.

Richly acidic smelling. Tart aromas but lusciously smooth. Quite pretty. Very very smooth palate entry. Lush and decadent, showing tart but beautiful fruit notes. Very wonderfully balanced on the palate. Tart, rich tartness on thee finish. Really beautifully smooth and integrated. The prettiest one yet.

The first complete vintage under the helm of the current Jean-Louis Chave. This offers very decadent, smooth, elegant and pretty aromas. Some cherry put and dust in there too, but overall incredibly lovely. Pretty palate entry too, with some tart and puckering notes. Smooth and mellow acid dials up. Some dust on the epalate, which is overall mellow in its approach. Some tertiary notes on the finish, which is soft but a nice grittiness and puckering notion takes over after a few seconds.

Quite a bit of tertiary aromas here. Puckering tartness and smooth, soft berries, including some notes on the darker side; plums. Rich palate entry immediately attacks with luscious fruit. Quite soft and mellow; elegant. Tart, rich and open, showing smooth soft acid. Beautiful luscious textured acidity on the finish. Incredible structural balance. So pretty and elegant. I absolutely love the intensity of attack on the end. The finest red of the lineup.

This wine was poured "blind" and placed after the 1990. It offered a tart, dark complexion on the nose. Some slightly volatile acidity, but still nice; certainly seems different from the others in the lineup. Intense rich tart fruit. Quite elegant on the palate, though pretty intense, too. Rich puckering acid on the finish. Decadent and very pretty. Not as much depth as the others in the lineup, but still fine.

Flight 2 - Hermitage Blanc (7 notes)

White
2010 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Rich and imposing aromas, with lots of intensity. Lovely creaminess on palate entry and quite decadent with its intensity. Lovely tartness on the puckering finish, but not too much depth at current.
White
2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Really intense aromas, including some popcorn notes. Decadent and lush palate entry. Milky and buttery tasting. Tart and lush, with flavors of honey and nuts. Rich, tart acid dial up on the finish. Quite rich. Lovely.

Soft and smooth aromas, with notes of candied quite fruit. Just beautiful palate though, with crazy richness and lusciousness. Incredible intensity and creaminess. Crazy intensity and lush creaminess on the puckering finish. A real beauty. After this spent a few hours in the glass it shut down and began tasting rather alcoholic with a crazy short finish. Score for first pour, as at the end it was more like 89.
White
2002 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Lovely, lush but mellow aromas. The palate is odd, chunky in texture, with some popcorn notes. Tart flavors, but really strange chardonnay type notes. Smoothed out a bit with time, but never got too interesting. Puckering finish, with tart acid. A little intense, hot and off balanced. Quite a lot of toasted oak flavors.

2000 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Some funky tartness on the nose. Rich palate entry, but tastes a bit like the cork (not corked). Pretty mellow, with soft rich acid. Really mellow finish, but puckering and rice flavors linger nicely.
White
1997 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Darker color here, with some deeper intense aromas, and some slightly oxidative qualities. Buttery. Very rich and decadent palate entry. A smooth beauty that coats the palate with its viscosity. Tart, but also relaxing on the palate. Nice grape flavors on the finish, which is puckering and tart. Lingers very well and makes the palate feel nice.
White
1994 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

The white of the night for me. Really intense orange marmalade aromas. Fantastic and wonderful smelling! Really lovely, rich palate. Just beautiful intensity of orange rind again. Very impressive, different but beautiful. It's decadent and sweet. Really intense beautiful eruption of beauty and grace on the finish. So elegant, and after a few minutes there's a nice puckering bitterness that lingers. What a beauty.
