Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
1993 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Double blind. Pale ruby color. Fragrant aromas of aged red fruit and herbs. Palate shows medium body with good dose of acid that provides balance. More earth-driven flavors on the palate. Medium finish.
Red
1993 Georges Lignier et Fils Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Pale ruby. Nose is shy and tired - not giving much. Palate also shows tired and even stripped of fruit, with acid dominating at the forefront.
Red
1993 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
Double blind. Ruby color. Wow, gorgeous big lifted aromas of red and black fruit, with eucalyptus, mint and vanilla notes. Palate shows young with youthful, round black fruit and integrated american oak notes of dill and mint. Fresh with a long finish. Surprised to see this is a 20 year old wine!
Red
1993 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 Australia, South Australia
Double blind. Ruby. Wow, gorgeous aromatics of red fruit, bell pepper, vanilla and spice. Palate has terrifically lifted, bright and persistent fruit. Medium+ finish. Preferred this slightly to a double blind '93 Grange served side-by-side.
Red
1993 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Double blind. Medium ruby. Initially only modest aromatics of red fruit and herbs - but this picks up with a couple of hours in the glass (and significant decanting time before that). Yum. Focused palate has berries, spice and bell pepper. Youthful fruit and still firm tannic structure. With air and time this picks up Bordeaux notes.
Red
1993 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Double blind. Light ruby color. Palate shows primary at first with red fruit and potpourri spice - with time, picks up pepper and savoury notes. Palate has black fruit and more exotic christmas spices. Good acidic grip and brightness. Very long.
Red
1993 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
Double blind. Ruby. Musty nose that may very well have been corked. Palate also showed hollow and stripped. Poor vintage or corked? I'll vote corked.
Red
1993 Yarra Yering Shiraz Underhill Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Double blind. Medium ruby. Nose has lifted and bright aromatics of red and black fruit and spice. Palate shows a rich and round profile - clearly mature with some spice and herbal kick. Medium+ finish.
Red
1993 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Double blind. Ruby. Lifted aromatics show some power with black cherry and herbs. Palate has plenty of life with good red fruit and grip. Nice but not overly complex.
Red
1993 Dominique Laurent Beaune Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune
Double blind. Ruby. Interesting nose with black cherry and sandalwood. Palate has smooth black cherry with more sandalwood and woodspice. Medium body with good balancing acidity.
