October 8, 2023 - Sunday Northern Rhône Survey (San Francisco): Red center, limpid rim. Forward aromas of almost candied fruit, green herbs, and soil. Lighter weight with an odd combination of artificially sweet fruit and underripe stalkiness which worsened over time. I wonder if this was chaptalized, but I’ve frequently been mistaken about this. Others loved the complexity of this bottle, but I found it to be attenuated and lacking in intensity and length.

March 14, 2023 - 1993 survey, or filling a hole with Chave (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Producer over vintage. This is the 2002 all over again. In such a difficult vintage, a killer bottle of wine is still made. I admit to being more impressed by this knowing the vintage, but objectively this is an outstanding rendition of a lighter, gentler version of Chave. Very saline with lots of olive emerging on the nose with air. Delicate and silky with beautiful acidity. It feels like we hit the bottle at peak tonight and this was definitely among the favourites at the table tonight. But you know, Chave is Chave.

September 12, 2021 - Malgré une conservation en demie bouteille, vin en pleine forme. Bouchon impeccable. Belle complexité sur les arômes tertiaires. Champignons, cuir. Profondeur et plénitude.

June 28, 2021 - Another solid 90s Chave Hermitage. As I’ve been working my way through all of the 80s, 90s, and 00s Chave, I’ve yet to meet a vintage that I didn’t enjoy. The 93’ holds up, is drinking well and has a typical Chave flavor profile. Not quite as good as the 94’, similar to the 92’, and very tasty indeed.

November 22, 2019 - This is tired. The fruit is still just there, but it is long past its window.
