Introduction
Our annual "mondo" wine tasting. I was suffering with a cold and so were a couple others in attendance. I had moments of clarity and could get a good sense of the wines, but much of the nuance and subtleties that make these wines so exhilarating were lost. A real shame.
Flight 1 - Starters (2 notes)
The Pianpolvere was a great wine. It is funny this was a wine to get our palates ready for the good stuff.
Casoulet was served to fill our bellies before the bounty of great wines.
White
2010 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Deeper yellow amber; honey, apple, waxy, peach; nice mouthfeel, apple, lemon, waxy texture, a little pent up; good.
Flight 2 - Main Event- Double Blind (10 notes)
$150 suggested minimum. Nobody really comes close to that, though.
Lamb done on green egg served after.
Red
1989 Tertre Rôteboeuf
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Dark chocolate core aged, pale rim; mushrooms, sous bois, dark cherry, dark chocolate, a bit musty on the nose; palate is heavy, lower acid, nutty, less fruit, molasses; kind of awkward; a real shame, found out later the cork broke and the wine was filtered through a Vinturi which probably damaged the wine.
Red
1994 Château Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Pretty ruby crimson; sweet brulee, currant, exotic rose, licorice; nice density on palate, cedar, rose, compact, green pepper; love the elegance, lighter tannin red fruit and good acid really spoke to me, also a big fan of the vintage.
Red
1998 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Good clarity, rose ruby; rustic nose, roses, sour cherry, intense; weighty, sappy, almost residual sugar, intense nutty, dried leaves, Burgundian, medicinal finish; I liked how this one had no VA, a great wine; 94+.
Red
1999 Château Ausone
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Very pretty bright ruby garnet; currant, tobacco, bright, fruit, cherry, floral, loamy earth; pencil shavings galore, red currant, tart cherry, strong tannin, powerful, good vintage; I like the red fruit, so young and has so much more to give, 95+; very nice, most were on Left Bank
Red
1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Garnet core with bright lighter ruby rim; pencil lead, wet earth, red and black currant, mushroom, cow pie, leather, very Pauillac; silky texture with caressing tannin, broad and expansive, raisin, red currant, chocolate; very good bottle, still youthful.
Red
2001 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
See through crimson with orange rim; cinnamon, sour cherry, Burgundian; lots of Band-Aid on the palate, very strong bitter note, very classic CdP, lighter body than the Bordeaux today, power, baby aspirin; still very youthful, called '98 Bonneau Celestins- should have worked my way to '01 because the '98 tastes like Amarone;95+.
Red
1990 Château Montrose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Dense chocolate core with garnet rim; earth, tart, currant, cherry, orange oil, tobacco, some Brett; fleshy, silky initially, luxurious, grainy tannin comes in later, strong mid-palate, funk, medicinal; very good but not a wine I could drink a ton of because of the lower acid; voted WOTN.
Red
2008 Lucien Le Moine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
See through ruby almost to rim; intensely elegant and piercing nose of sour cherry, spice, rose, medicinal; intense palate, fresh, rose, cherry, sweet very long and persistent finish, great balance, should age beautifully, not a broad wine- reminds me of 6 inch stilettos walking right down the middle of my palate; saw a good bit of air but could have used more, more time in bottle would have been ideal; 95+.
Red
2004 Château Cheval Blanc
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Darker core with some clarity, bright garnet; youthful, good fruit, red, medicinal, focused, incense; tart puckery tannin, good acid, finishes drier, very supple; 94+.
Flight 3 - Dessert Wines (3 notes)
Served with King Cake from Sucre and delicious rum cake.
White - Off-dry
1976 Zach. Bergweiler-Prüm Erben Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Deep uric color, orange golden hues; golden raisin, Pledge, orange, lemon custard, still very fresh; delicious palate, has lost some sweetness, honey, apple, persistent; could easily have gone another 20+ years; everyone amazed at age.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella Classico
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella Classico
Garnet color, good clarity; plum, prune, medicinal, some alcohol showing; cough syrup on palate, sappy and sweet, intense, rich, alcoholic with brandy warmth finish; tasty.
