Flight 1 (14 notes)

Red
2001 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Tasted double blind. Maturing black fruit with some background/ emerging spice, barnyard hints. Tannins slightly firm right now relative to fruit.
Red
1982 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Tasted double blind. Open 30-45 minutes before serving. Moderately mature black cherry and plum, definitely ripe. Good spice and espresso notes. A good showing, but this would most likely have benefited from more air.
Red
1992 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
89 points
Tasted double blind. I thought this left bank Bordeaux, as did most others at the tasting. All black fruit, still very fresh, moderate spice. Lots of acidity and tannins not quite as balanced as other bottles I recall from the past.
Red
2012 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Slightly more red than black cherry on both nose and palate. Starts with lots of fun, forward fruit and subtle spice. Sneaky structure comes through at the end that will keep this alive and powerful long-term. Bottle had been Coravin'ed 4 weeks earlier, ~1/3 consumed, then opened today, with no detraction from freshness.
Red
2001 Michele Satta Bolgheri Piastraia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
87 points
Tasted double blind. Came across as very New World and modern-styled Bordeaux blend with tasty, maturing black fruit and ok spice.
Red
2001 E. Guigal Ermitage Ex-Voto France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
94 points
Tasted double blind. Powerful black and red cherry on nose and palate with espresso and slowly softening tannins. Lots of power. Just barely entering its peak drinking window.
Red
2007 Coche-Dury Pommard Les Vaumuriens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
90 points
Served double blind to the tasting group. All red fruit that is nicely matured/ maturing, seemingly older than 2007 to many tasters. Good spice, soft structure that is very representative of the vintage. Best around now. Kudos to Jamie who immediately identified this as Pommard.
Red
2001 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Tasted double blind. Dense black fruit, meaty, fun and forward with a good enough concentrated start, but short and slightly simple finish.
Red
2006 Abreu Rothwell Hyde USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
80 points
Tasted double blind. Extremely ripe, fat and roasted black fruit with signs of residual sugar. I understand why this can be a fun wine to drink, but don't understand how somebody can bring this to a blind tasting that focused on much better Old World wine.
Red
2002 Bonneau du Martray Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
93 points
Tasted double blind. Subtle floral start with maturing red cherry, some black cherry with most excellent. Flavors well balanced with very elegant structure. Very good now. A rare treat that I don't think actually gets officially imported to the US any more.
Red
2005 Dujac Fils et Père Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
92 points
Served double blind to the tasting group. Open 45 minutes before serving. Lots of power and ripe black and red berry aromas and flavors. Both the Vosne and Dujac character coming through better than another bottle from last year, this is a forward and accessible 2005 with serious concentration coming through on finish.
Red
1998 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Tasted double blind. Mature black cherry, some tobacco. Very good now, nicely balanced.
Red
N.V. Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Reserva Especial 1991, 1994, 1999 (2012 Release) Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Tasted double blind. Powerful, dense and meaty black fruit aromas and flavors that never quite came across as perfectly integrated and/or balanced. Tough to assess because the fruit quality is clearly top notch, but the pleasure was hard to find. Very long and expanding finish. I was very confused while tasting, and given the wine's pedigree and aging potential. Based on all the older releases I've tried, I expect this will really start showing well 2020 or later.

2011 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Good array of accessible red fruit aromas and flavors with modest spice. Overall easy to enjoy right now once a little mustiness blew off.
