This pours a fairly deep, rich yellow/gold. The nose on isn't particularly rich but displays mature, nutty, lightly sherried aromatics balanced against the very tart predominantly green apple fruit. The palate is off dry and feels like 10-11 g/p RS with very high, biting malic (green apple) acid. The finish isn't terribly long but does replay some of the nutty elements. For me, I would have guessed that this was more chard driven than pinot due to the hard, green acid. Overall an interesting wine, but there wasn't anything to bridge the gap between the sherried notes and the tart malic acid as well as surprisingly not that much autolytic action, both of which would have improved things in my view. Still solid and it isn't often you find a mature, fairly priced champagne in our market.

Still predominantly young and primary with just a bit of secondary aroma poking out. I was expecting a bit more development but this isn't bad. Nose is of blackberry liquor, black raspberry, port-like plum, herbs de Provence, hints of black olive and tar. The palate shows a light kiss of tannin with sweet dark fruit and elevated alcohol. Nothing profound, but solid in this style. A good effort in this unheralded vintage.

My best bottle of '01 Beauccastel yet! The nose is of raspberry, strawberry, old spicy leather, stony soil, game, herbs de Provence, Dried florals, charcuterie and blood. The palate features mostly red fruit on a light frame with good acid and low tannin. Finish is medium plus carried on red fruit and lots of secondary gamey notes. Great showing.

A solid, sweet red fruited, though almost borderline confected example of Morey Saint Denis here. The nose reveals raspberry coulis, rhubarb, strawberry tart, creme anglais, vanilla wafer, woodsy spice, herbs and a touch of undergrowth. The palate is still tightly wound with elevated tannin and acid given the genre. The tart cranberry-like red fruited acid is an appealing aspect of this wine in my view. Still young today. I'm uncertain about the bright, almost sweet red fruit, but age should help this to integrate.

A very nice showing here. This opened nicely over the course of an hour. Never an expansive nose, this was more singular, focused on the higher toned end of the spectrum with a nose of mixed florals, perfume, citrus peel, cedar and red spiced cherry notes. The oak is prominent, but seems to be integrating. The palate is refined with tannins that aren't too obtrusive and a nice, predominantly red fruited finish this is at most moderate in length. This is my first Clerico and while I have heard they have a reputation for leaning to the modernist camp, this example came across as more moderate, perhaps even ever so slightly traditional. I also heard that Galloni said that this is in danger of early maturity, but this bottle showed no signs of decline with many good years ahead of it no doubt.

I really like this style. Perhaps just a bit ripe, dark and primary for me today, there is huge potential. It pours a dark with a nose of dark cherry, purple flowers, blackberry, leather, brown spices and rosemary. You can tell this is built to develop into a savoury wine and is just a tad primary today. Enjoyable to check in to see where it's at, but will surely be at it's best in 10+ years. The palate is deeply fruited with moderate tannin and acid finishing medium plus in length. Certainly a bit on the rich side for this producer. Maybe just a bit below 92 for me today, but I have not doubt it will achieve that level.

2005 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very consistent note to last time. This pours relatively light and the nose pops from the glass straight away wafting aromas of strawberry, red cherry, vanilla, caramel, powdered sugar, marzipan, perfume and hints of coconut. Obviously a very unique style that is focused on the sweet primary fruit and oak. My preference is for a tad more depth and more savoury secondary and tertiary notes. I may be a lone ranger on this but I would personally place fuligni in the modern leaning camp. I have heard they have pulled back a bit on the oak and so hold out hope that future vintages might be more up my alley.

Can't ask for much more of this wine. Wonderful showing. Savoury and in a wonderful drinking window. The nose is rustic, savoury and deep of dark cherry, sweat, rosemary, brown spice and cured meat. Could keep my nose in the glass all night. The palate has a wonderful deep dark ripe cherry texture replaying the savoury earthy and meaty notes against dusty low tannin and moderate acid. A Tuscan classic. Beautiful and my WOTN.
