La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting
Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY
Tasted February 28, 2015 by Burgundy Al with 1,223 views
Introduction
Another excellent and educational tasting. I didn't get to every wine and wrote undecipherable notes on a few others. These are listed in the order of the book provided, not the sequence in which tasted. I largely went through all the red wines first, then through all the whites.
Flight 1 - Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils (3 notes)
Flight 2 - Domaine William Fèvre (4 notes)
White
2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. This was the least accessible of the lineup today. Lemon and lemon peel that wasn't particularly forthcoming, but long and precise middle to finish with oystershell and lift. Needs time.
White
2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very exciting potential here with plenty of orchard fruit throughout. Fatter vs Bougros, but with the same impressive that foreshadows its potential. Needs a few years in the cellar.
Flight 3 - Paul Pillot (4 notes)
White
2012 Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. A step up from the Grandes Ruchottes. Apple and lemon peel aromas and flavors with a faint hint of tropical fruit that doesn't interfere with the wine's overall elegance. Good length.
Flight 4 - Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (3 notes)
White
2012 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. This was slightly reductive and will also benefit from some cellar time. Lots of powerful fruit with roasted almonds, with lots of acidity, good length. I like the medium term potential here.
White
2012 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. No reduction here, this went right to ripe, dense orchard fruit with some mango and peach hints. Grand Cru concentration and impressive length. Powerhouse potential.
Flight 5 - Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard (4 notes)
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Blagny
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Again ripe apple with some charming spice. Slightly heavier weight vs most, something I find common in Blagny and that I typically don't prefer when young.. This will reward a few more years in the cellar.
White
2012 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. A step up from the Poruzots, this brings ripe apple, lemon zest and spice together in a manner that really showcases the wine's crispy, mineral-driven textures to provide a lacy, racy mouth feel. Very good overall with top notch balance.
Flight 6 - Pierre Morey / Morey-Blanc (3 notes)
White
2012 Pierre Morey Bourgogne Blanc
France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Tasting, brief note. Tart apple with some lemon hints, I find the acidity a bit assertive right now, but think the concentration for its level is impressive and have high expectations for 2016 forward
White
2012 Morey-Blanc Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Blanc
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Apple and lemon peel with floral notes. Very good balance, very good now. Probably also a very good value wine.
White
2012 Pierre Morey Meursault
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting, brief note. Slightly floral with apple, quince and hint of toasted walnut. Good balance and concentration. Good young, but I slightly prefer the St Aubin 1er tasted immediately prior.
Flight 7 - Domaine Roulot (4 notes)
White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting, brief note. Floral start with apple and pear. Ripe and slightly lush with a rounded mouth feel, but more energy from middle to finish brings out a nice citrus note. Very good at its level.
White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Luchets
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting, brief note. Apple and some lemon on nose and palate. Richer start, leaner finish. Certainly good, but I didn't find this better than the Meursault Villages.
White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. One of my favorites of the tasting. Great array of yellow, green and red apple, even with some baked apple character with clove and nutmeg. Very long and powerful with energy springing out at the finish.
Flight 8 - Domaine Leflaive (4 notes)
White
2012 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and rich apple and peach, but with very good balance. Good intensity but just moderate length. Good now.
White
2012 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. I rarely consider Domaine Leflaive wines to be subtle, but this beauty is beautifully elegant and even understated. Ripe apple with spice and floral notes throughout. Very long, powerful and superbly balanced.
Flight 9 - Domaine des Comtes Lafon (4 notes)
Flight 10 - Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon (4 notes)
Flight 11 - Domaine Jacques Prieur (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Grèves
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Good cross-section of red and black berry with a hint of liqueur. Firm tannins that show a few rough edges right now. Cellar for 5 years.
Red
2012 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Dark fruit overall with some pleasurable Vosne-like spice. Forward today and already easy to enjoy. I might be underestimated its potential based on how tasty it is today.
White
2012 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Subtle start, ripe apple, mint and baking spice hints. This unfolds on your taste buds with a very long finish. It would be easy to underestimate this wine, but great power and concentration really only emerge at the end.
Flight 12 - Domaine Parent (3 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Parent Corton-Renardes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit driven, this is far more backward vs the two Pommards just tasted. This really comes across as classically Corton with its backward character and need for a decade (++) in the cellar.
Flight 13 - Domaine de Montille (2 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine de Montille Corton-Clos du Roi
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Dense black cherry and plum on nose and palate with very impressive density. There is nothing subtle here, but the tannins and overall structure are very classy. Very good potential.
Flight 14 - Domaine Michel Lafarge (3 notes)
Red
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Red fruit with floral start. Same red cherry on palate, moderate ripeness, modest spice and firm tannins that will need time in the cellar. Good, but my least favorite of the three tasted today.
Flight 15 - Joseph Drouhin (2 notes)
Red
2012 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Red berry and cherry throughout with subtle spice. Good density and power, but with very elegant classically Chambolle textures that provide a balance I truly enjoy. Very good.
Red
2012 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. slightly more red fruit driven vs classic Beze, but with tarragon, leather and sauvage. Moderate weight for right now, but with excellent structure, mineral textures and balance. I enjoyed this more than most others did today.
Flight 16 - Bouchard Père et Fils (4 notes)
White
2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Domaine
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Larger and bigger. Apple, baked apple and brown spice that seems to start with a touch of sweetness, then finishes with savory power. Good young. I look forward to trying Cabotte.
Red
2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Roasted meat with black berries and plum, meaty spice and leather. Firm, dense and meaty, this shows great structure but will need a decade+ to really mature.
Flight 17 - Louis Jadot (2 notes)
Red
2012 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black berries with some hints of liqueur and braised meat aromas. Jammy, ripe fruit again on palate with lots of power and very firm structure. This needs a decade+.
Red
2012 Louis Jadot Griotte-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe red and black cherry with lots of spice that seems to pick up weight from start to finish. Very elegant wine in a restrained package that packs a punch on finish.
Flight 18 - Simon Bize (4 notes)
Red
2012 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Slightly riper and fatter than the others just tasted, making this easy to enjoy. A slightly rugged tannic backbone will soften soon and make this even more interesting.
Red
2012 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. For me this was clearly the star of today's lineup. More black than red fruit but a good combination of aromas and flavors with very good spice throughout. Dense and long with good energy on finish
Flight 19 - Domaine Faiveley (4 notes)
Red
2012 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Rich with dense black berry compote aromas with great concentration on the nose. More restrained flavors that are starting to show classically Corton structure. Burly, long finish. Excellent potential.
Red
2012 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Les Ouvrées Rodin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. A personal highlight for today's tasting. Lots of black cherry and blackberry with good spice and a hint of braised meat. Comes across as ripe but restrained with everything in sensational balance. Very long and persistent. I am glad I tasted this early in the day because it's elegance can easily be lost in this 30+ producer marathon.
White
2012 Faiveley Bâtard-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Lush aromatic start with lots of ripe apple, some citrus peel with some new oak protruding today. More restrained flavors with more citrus and apple with well structured finish.
Flight 20 - Domaine Méo-Camuzet (Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs) (3 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. All red fruit aromas and flavors that shows elements of the Vosne styling of many northern NSG wines with signs of the dense, meatiness more common from wines from the more central vineyards in NSG.
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Perrières
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. I like this wine a lot but found it to show more Meo style with ripe red fruit and savory spice vs classically Corton, although this is firm and slightly brooding on finish. Give a decade+ in cellar.
Flight 21 - Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg (4 notes)
It is always great to spend time with one or both of the Mugneret sisters in charge of the domaine. Today I had some time to talk with Marie-Christine and her husband Eric and hopefully succeeded in convincing them to visit Chicago (not in winter) to join my friends for a wine dinner celebrating their wines. They said they would try to visit within the next two years. I will need to follow up.
Red
2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting, brief note. Fresh red fruit with very good spice that is so prototypically Vosne. Power, firmness and acidity help provide textures, length and ageworthiness.
Flight 22 - Domaine Jean Grivot (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting, brief note. A very good vintage for this wine. Forward, ripe and fun red berries everywhere with some sneaky structure at the end helps provide textures and elegance.
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. I like this wine in almost every vintage and the 2012 is another star performance. Ripe red and black berries and ripe and perfumed with excellent weight and textures that keeps expanding. Great balance.
Flight 23 - Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting, brief note. Ripe red berries with anise and floral notes. Slightly sweet fruit with savory spice that is all perfectly harmonious. ery good density, excellent Villages level wine, even if not a particularly excellent value.
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Echezeaux
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Super spice and floral start with gobs of wild red berry aromas and flavors. Persistent and perfectly harmonious, this seems accessible today but has powerhouse potential for when it matures.
Flight 24 - Domaine d'Eugénie (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée Le Clos d'Eugenie
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting, brief note. Fresh with ripe red and black berries. Some pronounce dnew oak will need a year or two to integrate better. There is an interested roasted meat character I wouldn't normally associate with Vosne, but still found it enjoyable.
Red
2012 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black cherry and berry that is somewhat dominated by spice with a whole cluster character I found a little too pronounced today. Good but a little disappointing to me for the quality of the vintage and vineyard.
Red
2012 Domaine d'Eugénie Echezeaux
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Spice-driven with concentrated red fruit and dark chocolate hints. Elegant start, more meaty middle through finish. Very good.
Red
2012 Domaine d'Eugénie Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Great aray of berry aromas and flavors with lots of both whole cluster and new oak spice everywhere. Impressive balance and cellarworthy potential.
Certainly the best d'Eugenie wine offered today, I think Clos Vougeot has consistently been the wine the new owners have best figured out; of course, Engel's holdings used to produce some of the vineyard's benchmark wines.
Flight 25 - Alain Hudelot-Noellat (4 notes)
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Chambolle-Musigny
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. Red berry and cherry on nose and palate with subtle spice and fairly firm structure for its level. Good mouth feel, very good for its level.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. One of the tougher wines to assess today. Floral and spice driven start with very powerful and concentrated array of cherry aromas. Also a powerhouse on palate, but with some overt new oak that will need time. I can see that Charles is really attempting to step up the quality of this cuvee and the raw materials in bottle are extremely promised, even if not in perfect harmony today.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Interesting that when tasted from barrel (a single barrel of course) this was more black and meaty, while today this was all about charming wild red berries with great spice and intensity. Powerful while superbly elegant and almost weightless, which is slightly unusual for RSV. Incredible class. Excellent.
Flight 26 - Hubert Lignier (2 notes)
Red
2012 Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. An elegantly styled beauty, perhaps atypical for a Gevrey Grand Cru. While nicely ripe, the spice and textures are the star here. A wine that requires attention and patience. Very good potential, perhaps 93 or 94 points in the future.
Flight 27 - Domaine Lignier-Michelot (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black and red berry aromas and flavors with very good ripeness and spice throughout, all with charming textures and mouth feel. Textbook Clos de la roche for me.
Flight 28 - Clos de Tart (2 notes)
Red
2011 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. 50% whole cluster. Floral start with spice and red berries. Flavors were slightly less appealing to me, with more structure than ripe fruit and firm tannins for the level of concentration. I guess this was one of the more controversial wines at the tasting, with several people telling me they thought it showcased the green character of many 2011s, but I really can't completely agree with that.
Red
2012 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. In contrast to the slightly underripe 2011, this shows lots of ripe black cherry, dark chocolate and baking spice. Also 50% whole cluster, this was both bright and fat with good textures and balance, even if just moderate depth.
Flight 29 - Domaine Alain Burguet (4 notes)
Flight 30 - Domaine Fourrier (4 notes)
Red
2012 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Another very special vintage for Fourrier's CSJ, this showcases dense fruit, great spice and structure in excellent balance with everything else in glass. Perhaps less power and density vs some of the better recent vintages for this, including 2009 or 2010.
Flight 31 - Olivier Bernstein (4 notes)
Red
2012 Olivier Bernstein Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Spice throughout with cross-section of red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Rich but balanced. Drinking well today. I didn't want to like this, but just couldn't resist.
Red
2012 Olivier Bernstein Mazis-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. For me this was a step down from the Clos de la Roche, and not just because Mazis is more tannic and backward. In fact, I found this slightly lighter than normal for Mazis from a good/ripe vintage and didn't find the same harmony as in the better wines in the lineup. Bigger, better fruit emerges on finish, but it still just didn't give me the same composed impression as did the CdlR or Beze.
Red
2012 Olivier Bernstein Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very ripe black fruit with great spice and rock star concentration. A bit too much vanilla and chocolate right now, but I am confident everything will come together beautifully in a few years.
