Flight 1 - Sparkling/Riesling (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
1999 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Coeur de Cuvée France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Great focus to this. Stylish and lovely acidity, fresh, some slight mature notes but still very clean.
White - Off-dry
1997 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Maybe a little generic but nice slatey feel and wonderful acid sugar balance. Perfectly mid-mature, no oxidised aspects but not overly petrolly either. 97s seem to drink so well at the moment to me.
White
2001 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
On the slide, but not totally past it. A bit cider-y, but with acidity , typicity and body too still.

Flight 2 - Burlotto Pair (2 notes)

Great comparison, both wines so interesting. In an ideal world probably drink them somewhere in between either age although the 50 year old was pretty special.

Red
1964 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Yes old, but really rather wonderful. Cork was very perilous but the wine was special. A little volatile, mushrooms, some menthol, underneath that something a bit plummy. Beautiful balance, lively acidity.
Red
2004 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Wonderfully perfumed, olives alongside the floral aspects. Far less tannic than 5 years ago but also a way to go before it is really mature and still a little closed. Ripe but not flabby. I love this wine although at the same time it is a strange mix of traditional and atypical.

Flight 3 - Monprivato Pair (2 notes)

Such a shame the corked bottle didn't allow a proper comparison.

Red
1999 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
flawed
Corked. Very badly. The one sip I could bear to take revealed lovely texture and balance, and even some fruit flavours that were strong enough to survive the TCA. But the nose was totally compromised.
Red
1982 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
So so young. Utterly classic, rather severe, Barolo. Tar, mint, still quite tannic. Would have been 15 years out tasting this blind. But quite captivating and a wonderful pair with the authentically old Burlotto.
