Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that reveal which wine it is. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2004 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
In the bouquet dark forest fruits, sweet spices and beautiful oak. On the palate red berries, a bit creamy, some herbs and spices, vanilla, good acidity and soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. Overall a beautiful wine which is ready now and still has a future of several years, but it did not have the complexity we expected.
Red
2011 Clos Vieux Taillefer France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
88 points
Beautiful bouquet with creamy red and dark forest fruits, a bit lactic and rustic. On the palate the same creaminess and fruits, some herbs and spices, a touch of sweetness and good acidity. There is a touch of bell pepper as well. The tannin is youthful and round and has a soft bite. Probably wise to wait until around 2019+
Red
2002 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Beautiful wine which, after hearing it was a 2002, I pinpointed blind as Pontet Canet. Just in the glass the wine was not so very expressive, but soon cassis and other dark fruits, beautiful oak, graphite and a touch of pleasant barnyard appeared. On the palate all the impressions of the nose are there as well and a slight touch of green bell pepper which belongs to 2002. Firm acidity and firm tannin as well with still a spicy bite. Keeping this until 2020 will not be any problem. It might last even longer.
Red
2004 Château La Croix St. Georges France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
This was the most pleasant wine of the afternoon, because it was the most ready and has beautiful and luxurious elements. The bouquet is very tempting with red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices, cigar box, vanilla, some smoke and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate everything come back as well as some chocolate, good vanilla, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Ready now and no real hurry. I have a few more and I am looking forward to them.
Red
2004 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
The bouquet is still a bit locked but there are dark forest fruits like cassis, laurel, licorice, graphite and luxurious oak. On the palate dark forest fruits, beautiful juice, sweet spices and really a lot of cassis. Good acidity and still firm tannin and pleasant bitterness. Overall a wine in its very early maturity stage, firm, but also elegant. A mouth full. Still has a great future. Waiting until 2020 might be wise. 92 – 93+ for this afternoon.
