Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
1991 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Wine aired in decanter for 3 hours then poured back into bottle before tasting. Not rated as had only 1 glass.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sweet tea leaves, savoury dirty earth, old leather, spice, tobacco/cigar. Gains freshness with more airtime and swirling in the glass. Sweet tea leaves diminished and dark red cherries with cherry liqueur emerged. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity despite the tertiary savouriness, medium+ alcohol (14%), extremely silky elegant medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury earth, tobacco, spice, leather, blackcurrant, dark red cherries, juicy red plums. Long finish.
Lots of contemplation needed to penetrate its complexity. Very integrated already although it feels like it could still age another decade. Really boggles my mind how it can seem to gain freshness in the glass with more air.
Outstanding quality. Intellectual yet effortless on the palate kind of drink.

Very good quality. Dark black fruit character. Cabernet Sauvignon more obvious here. Feels quite Left Bank Bordeaux-like. At this point in time, this is just shy of being monolithic. Drink in 7-8 years' time. May become like aged claret?
