Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
N.V. Broadbent Vinho Verde Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
86 points
50% Loureiro, 40% Trajadura, 10% Pederna

Pale straw with hints of green.
Neutral nose with some youthful esters (generic white flowers). Slight green apple, underripe white peach.
Fresh and light in the mouth - a definite frizzante, more than petillance to it (some CO2 is injected at bottling). Feels like very slight RS, around 3g/L (actually only 1.48, but it’s so light that this shows).
Light bodied, low alcohol (9%), medium plus acid, and moderate length.

Uncomplicated and refreshing
Rosé
N.V. Broadbent Vinho Verde Rosé Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
86 points
40% Borracal, 30% Espadeiro, 20% Amaral, 10% Vinhao
Moderately concentrated vibrant pink in the glass. Light and aromatic. Fresh breeze of distant strawberry jam. Very light but slightly sweet on the palate, tastes like ~3-5g RS (actually 14 g/L ? is that a typo?).
Distinct frizzante (CO2 is injected at bottling). Low alcohol (10%), elevated acid.

Similar to the regular Vinho Verde - uncomplicated and refreshing.
White
2014 Casa Ferreirinha Douro Planalto Reserva Branco Portugal, Douro
88 points
Moderate intensity rose petal (medium terpenes). Light in the mouth. Dry. Moderate alcohol - 12% (actually 12.5%). Medium plus acid. Moderate phenolic bitterness. Kind of like a lighter, less aromatic, dry Muscat.
Red
2013 Quinta do Crasto Douro Crasto Portugal, Douro
86 points
Medium plus concentration ruby
Alcoholic and buttery nose. Very ripe red cherry. Slight black pepper. Ripe and dark-fruited with a slight bitterness, almost like burnt pepper.
Full bodied with elevated alcohol (14%). Very ripe, almost slightly raisinated dark cherry. Slight ripe blackberry. No wood influence. Elevated acid. Medium plus tannins.

Kind of like a rough-around-the-edges Southern Rhone blend.

Red
2013 Quinta do Crasto Douro Superior Portugal, Douro
88 points
More concentrated ripe black cherry. Slight reduction (burnt rubber). Dry earth. Black raspberry. Some evidence of oak - baking spices, sanded wood.
Full bodied with elevated alcohol (14%), medium plus acid (bright and sparkly), medium plus tannins. Much more well-integrated than the regular Douro - with more texture and more balanced aromatics. Slight toast from oak.

Blend of vintage Ports in 5 years of oak.
Corked.

N.V. Ferreira Porto 10 Year Old Tawny Quinta do Porto Portugal, Douro, Porto
90 points
Medium minus concentration ruby, with slight bricking at the rim.
Rich nose with some sweet spiced oak - clove, nutmeg, freshly-sanded wood, vanilla, toast.
In the mouth, rich and sweet (porty!) with some development. This is super good. Tastes like port.
White - Fortified
N.V. Broadbent Madeira 5 Year Old Reserve Portugal, Madeira
91 points
Deep amber, with some reddish and tawny reflections.
Nutty nose - very Madeira. Sweet figs, slight impressions of dates and fruitcake, dried cherry. Complex and sweet with high acid (strong tartaric). Persistent on the palate. Long and strong.
White - Fortified
N.V. Broadbent Madeira Verdelho 10 Years Old Portugal, Madeira
91 points
Lighter in color than the 5 yr. Salmon. Floral nutty notes. Lighter in body and less sweet. Still high acid - finishes drier than the 5 yr.
White - Fortified
1999 Broadbent Madeira Colheita Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Less aromatic than the 5yr or 10yr. Nutty almond, slight play dough / ethyl acetate. Nutty, figgy, dates, with slight maple bourbon character. Really, really good on the palate. Long and intense finish, with high acidity.
Red
2007 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Tasted after a bunch of Madeiras.
Crazy weird red fruit… what is this? Cherry cordial? Pomegranate!!!
Tannic - med+ bordering on high tannins. Very young and unintegrated. The freshly sanded wood (oak influence) sticks out. Elevated acid.

No score - my impressions were after some pretty hefty wines, including Madeiras with blue cheese.
Red
2013 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
88 points
Medium ruby. Slightly floral with faint pyrazines (very dark green bell peppers). Structured with ripe tart blackberry flavors.

Score: Around 8.5-9.
Red
2010 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Single Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Barossa
90 points
Pure blackcurrant juice! Slight menthol/eucalyptus (pyrazines) and green olive. No overt oak influence. Black and blue fruit. Pure varietal cab!
Medium plus body, elevated alcohol 14% (actually 14.5), elevated acid and medium tannins.

Very nice!
Score: Around 9
