Introduction

Trip was in town with his family and four of us got together to try a few interesting wines.

Flight 1 - Domaine Carneros (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2006 Domaine Carneros Le Rêve USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
I am really surprised by the high ratings. Honey, apple, citrus and some mineral. Abundant, a bit coarse mousse. The overall expression is straightforward, fills more like a good deeply toned Cava than Champagne. I am not so sure why anyone would buy this when the 06 Comtes de Champagne can be had for a bit more.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 notes)

White
2005 Etienne Sauzet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Very polished and refined nose displaying white fruits, lemon, pear, apple, flint, lanolin, white pepper, steel and mineral. Excellent concentration, nicely layered fruits, polished and refined palate, slightly lacking acidity abut strong mineral presence provides good precision and balance, and lovely long mineral driven finish. Based on two recent samples, no sign of premox. Beautiful polished and refined Batard.
White
2008 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Really interesting and education to serve along with the 05 Sauzet Batard. Rich yellow pit fruits, lemon curd, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, dense ripe yellow fruit driven palate impression, good mineral expression, very bright acidity and clean medium to long finish. The fruit expression is not as polished as the Sauzet Batard. It is a riper style of Puligny 1er cru but maintains lovely tension and precision. This wine is incredibly consistent year in and year out.

Flight 3 - 1990 Beausejour and 1967 Chapoutier Cote Rotie (2 notes)

Red
1990 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
97 points
Perfectly harmonious nose displaying decadent yet fresh black fruits, blackberry, black cherry, plum and bitter chocolate. Incredibly silky and sensual palate, beautifully layered fruits, no noticeable tannins and lovely long finish. It is a sensual/sexy wine but perhaps not the most complex and profound. This bottle is absolutely singing.
Red
1967 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
95 points
Fully mature nose displaying cherry compote, raisin, cinnamon, sous bois, leather, tar and earth. Full body, excellent concentration, stewed cherry and leather driven palate impression, bright acidity, fully integrated tannins and lovely long finish. It lost most of Syrah characters but still displays Rhone wine characters. Really complex and delicious wine.

Flight 4 - 1999 d'Ampuis and a super tuscan (2 notes)

Red
1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
96 points
Explosive nose displaying intense youthful black fruits, blackberry liqueur, crushed black cherry, lavender, charred steak, black pepper and mineral. Exceptional concentration, beautifully layered fruits, bright acidity, sweet tannins and very long black fruit and mineral driven finish. The best showing of this wine. Unfortunate, my last bottle. This will improve with further cellaring but drinking fantastically in a very primary way. This ain’t Jamet but that doesn’t mean that it is a monolithic wine.
Red
2000 Tenuta di Trinoro Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
94 points
Intense dark fruit driven nose, cassis, concentrated cherry, exotic flowers, liquid smoke and mineral. Exceptional concentration, nicely layered fruits, intense cassis and cherry driven palate impression, bright acidity, noticeable but nicely integrated tannins and long finish that ends with intense cassis and smoke notes. Still quite youthful and masculine style of wine. Though big scale and ripe, quite fresh and vibrant. Really nice Super Tuscan.
