Introduction

The July double blind tasting was declared an uptown, meaning the wines were to be of better quality. While the group has never set a firm price or rule for what an uptown wine is, we've recently said that price-wise, in today's market, the wines should be in the $75+ ballpark...or at least in the ballpark's neighborhood. Anyway, we've had a lot of uptowns this year, and a lot of great wines as a result.

Wines are tasted double blind in random flights arranged roughly from light to heavy.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (4 notes)

Provided by the hosts, tasted double blind.

Rosé - Sparkling
2004 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage France, Champagne
90 points
Orange copper color. We're tasting warm up roses today! Nice berry fruit in the bouquet with a medium bead, toast and red berry fruit on the palate. Nice.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Deep pink color with notes of rich, toasted berry fruit and pear. Good fruit on the palate, with flavors of toasted marshmallow, orchard fruit and dough underneath the red berry notes. Finishes well. I much prefer this to warm up #1.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Reserve France, Champagne
92 points
Opens with a deep, rich toasted quality with orchard fruit, melon and red berry fruit as well. Fine bead with berry, cashew, dough and toast flavors. Lengthy finish, turning almost creamy. I do have an affinity for the Heidsieck style. 92+ pts.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Sauvage France, Champagne
91 points
Strawberry with an underlying clay/earth note. Fine bead and pretty- has an elegance to it. Flavors of red berry fruit and biscuit with a nice finish.

Flight 2 - Reds (6 notes)

Tasted double blind.

Red
2007 Pine Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
92 points
Notes of blueberry and raspberry turn to dark fruit, vanilla and dried herbs. Full-bodied with flavors of spice and dark fruit with a peppery finish. As it sits, a slightly sour note appears on the finish, but it's not distracting or unpleasant. Guessed Napa Cab Sauv blend.
Red
2008 Pine Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
90 points
Notes of black currants, pine resin, tar and red fruit. Develops notes of cherry and dill too. On the palate this is quite dense and plummy, tending towards ripe dark fruit with a fairly heavy wall of tannin and oak. Oak spice and dark fruit notes through the finish. Guessed Napa Cab Sauv blend.

We had some discussion when these were unveiled as to whether they were blends or 100% Sauv. From what I was able to find online and at the winery website, they bottle very few wines that are 100% of a single variety- these two are most definitely blends.
Red
2010 Peter Michael Pinot Noir Le Caprice USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
89 points
Spice, herb, cherry and red fruit notes. On the palate there are flavors of cherry, spice and nutmeg under a wall of tannin. The finish is long, but very firm. If I recall correctly, I even said this was "in the style of a Peter Michael Pinot" (and it's not a style of Pinot Noir I often enjoy though there are rare exceptions). Anyway, this is a massive, dense Pinot.
Red
2002 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Aromas of potpourri, plum, florals- lavender- turning to perfume and buttered popcorn with dark fruit underneath. Structured, but with ample fruit underneath. Flavors of cassis and black currants, violets and cherry. Long, balanced finish. 93+ pts.

While I don't consider this particular bottle "uptown" it certainly performed like on today. Very happy to have one or two in the cellar. Holding up nicely, drink now-2020.

Red
2012 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
94 points
Aromas of raspberry, blue fruit and vanilla follow through on the palate. With more air, notes of cherry, spice and dark fruit emerge. This is very well balanced- structured, with fine, sweet tannin and an abundance of supporting fruit. Finishes with great length and balance. Obviously young, but very tasty already. I am very glad the person who brought this has a few more I'll be able to taste as it ages. :) Guessed Napa Cab Sauv. 94-95 pts.

Red
2011 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Notes of green bell pepper, black fruit and spice. On the palate the wine shows more of the bell pepper along with dark fruit. It's balanced, but it is obvious that this fruit did not get ripe enough. A textbook example of under-ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. That being said, I do not mind the greener side of Cab, so while it wasn't great, it was for my palate a drinkable wine. Guessed Napa Cab.
