Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1994 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
87 points
Deep ruby with marked bricking appropriate for age; nose is moderately aromatic with cedar spice, tobacco, some remaining black fruits, slight capsicum; palate is full bodied, austere integrated tannins (slightly drying), residual black fruit through the midpalate; medium length finish. Fully mature, has the slight roughness of a St. Estephe, enjoyable and ready to drink now. Quite good for its release price of $20. 87-88
Red
1999 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
30 min decanting: Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose is moderate aromatic with some cinnamon, cigar smoke, underlying black fruit (almost dates in density); palate is full bodied, rich texture, integrated and balanced smooth tannins, blackberry fruit; medium finish. This is a well made St. Emilion, not too ripe but has smooth texture and density, heading toward or at peak with some secondary aromas but still good fruit. Initially after decanting this was reticent (I was scoring closer to 85), but this improved substantially. Now 88+, though this isn't necessarily one to search out for the price. I will drink my last two bottles over the next 3-4 years.
2.5 hours air: Rich dense red raspberry fruit, merlot dominated smooth texture. This has come together nicely with air: smoother texture, more interesting aromatics. Much better, 90, and I think the next time I drink it I will give it some significant air (2+ hours).
