Château Gruaud-Larose Vertical

Knightsbridge and Abigail's

Tasted September 15, 2016 by Nanda with 502 views

Introduction

The Chateau was in town to show it's current release, so a group of local wine geeks organized an accompanying vertical to get a deeper glimpse into the wines of Gruaud Larose.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Small taste. Full, aromatic nose of crushed plums, coffee and cigar. Palate has primary cedary red fruit. Tannins show smooth in light of the rich, forward fruit. Promising.

2010 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Small taste. Tasted side-by-side with the 2012, and this is more reserved and brooding. Nose is full bodied but non-delineated showing plum and cigar. The palate is serious with loads of depth and stuffing. The structure clamps it down. Down the road, a 94+ point wine if I had to guess.

I'm told another bottle of this opened earlier at the tasting (and given air) showed better. This small taste was cranky. Nose has stewy red fruit and ashy notes. Palate shows an initial attack of smooth red fruit and herb, but almost immediately thins out and loses intensity. Likely needs some air to round out and build depth.

White - Sparkling
2008 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Out of magnum. There's a lot to like here. As a youngster the pedigree is clear with the quality of white fruit, tight bead and crisp acidity. Concentrated yet zippy in its youth. Just giving you a glimpse of the depth and potential. Easily 2-4 points of upside.

2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) Les Arums de Lagrange France, Bordeaux
85 points
Admittedly I'm not a fan of aged white dry BDX, but this really tasted past peak and while interesting was no longer good/tasty to my palate. Nose opens with some swirling to reveal mature white fruit, hey and aged mushroom notes (which I don't particularly enjoy in white wine). Palate has a funky, earthy profile. There's still some fresh acids that move the wine along. But I just don't dig the flavors and profile of this wine.
White
2013 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
This showed surprisingly overt and new world. While it was balanced, I found the profile a bit out of character for Pucelles. An attractive and showy nose has sweet, candied, tropical fruit. Palate is delicious with rich, round orchard fruit. Moderate acids provide persistence and freshness. A real pleasure bomb right now.

Medium nose of beautiful, aged aromas -- cigar, ash and dried plum. Palate shows delicious dried fruit made complex with smoke, tar and ash. Excellent weight and intensity on the palate. Showed in the top third of tonight's GL vertical.

Always fun to try a birth year wine and this overachieved given the vintage and age. Nose shows aged/tired fruit, old leather and cedar chips. Palate is light bodied and on the thinner side, thought the fruit is still sweet and acids still present. Tannins resolved. A fine snapshot into old school GL, though one to drink ASAP.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
1998 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
80 points
The nose here is quite faint with just notions of ash and cedar. Palate is light, thin and watery. The fruit that is present is plummy. Austere. Pretty disappointing as other lighter vintages (that are much older) showed better in tonight's vertical.

Light-to-medium nose of plum, bell pepper and cigar. Palate is also light-to-medium bodied with softer fruit. Flavors are not intense, but echo the nose. Everything in proportion today, but I get the sense the fruit will start receding and lose out to tannin. Drink up.

Medium nose still shows some youthful plum fruit, bell pepper and cigar. Palate starts with medium body and fruit that flashes sweet intensity. Herbs, ash, cigar and old leather. Fades on the finish. An overachiever.

The nose here is surprisingly brutish and un-evolved with aromas of plum fruit and non-distinct earth/herb. Palate is medium body with substantial structure for the age. Brawny. I wonder if this needs more time or air.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
1983 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
This is a true 'wow' wine with profound complexity, character and intensity. Outperformed more heralded vintages in the vertical, including 1982. Stunning, full nose has intoxicating depth and layers -- dried plum, cigar, tar, earth, green herb and bell pepper. The palate is similarly impressive with medium body, lively fruit and stunning depth. Ashy plum fruit and complex flavors that echo the nose. Tannins are fine and smooth. Long, lingering finish. A wine to snatch up if you can.

Certainly suffered given the flight side-by-side with a stunning 1983 GL. The nose here is full with a bigger fruit component as the plum fruit is still youthful and spicy. Bell pepper aromas add complexity. Palate is broad with mouth-coating dark plum fruit. Spice, tar, ash and herbs add complexity. Still relatively youthful with some upside.

1986 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The nose here is moderate but a bit sneaky. Nuanced and complex nose has smokey plum fruit, herbs, cedar and ash. The palate is fully fruited and delicious. Dried plum, old leather, bell pepper and herb provide depth. Tannins are still a bit brawny. Drinking quite young and structured -- needs time or a ribeye. Impressive.

Medium nose has dried fruit, cigar and a pronounced ashy note. Palate is light-to-medium bodied. Earthy, tarry, ashy fruit is mature. Softening and nearly resolved tannin. A nice vintage with good intensity and complexity at the moment, but likely on the downslope.

Flight 8 (2 notes)

Red
1982 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Perfumed nose is subtle but gathers intensity with swirling. Deep with cigar, ash, cedar and green herb that complement dried plum. Delicious palate with forward cigar-y fruit that has medium body. Ethereal and intense as it crosses the palate. Lingering finish. One glass at dinner, and the last sip is the best. I'm sure this has upside. This particular glass was quite good, but not up to the lofty performance of prior bottles.

1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Contrary to all the GL's tonight, the fruit here is deeper and darker plum. Youthful fruit aroma with underlying ash, green herb and new leather. On the palate the fruit is still rich and quite frankly simple. I wonder if this just needs more time or serious decanting. High quality, but more superficial than other wines this evening.

Flight 9 (2 notes)

Red
1986 Château Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Full, gorgeous nose has earthy, herby, ashy dried plum. On the palate this shows relatively young (similar to the 86 GL earlier tonight) and almost brooding. Lush fruit with new leather, tobacco leaf and spice. Terrific balance of fruit and structure. Bravo.

Not fair to drink this after so many great bottles of the main GL. Nose here is relatively simple with youthful cherry and herbs. Palate has sweet, lush plum fruit. Nice balance and ready to go.
