Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2006 Venica & Venica Collio Friulano Ronco delle Cime Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
92 points
Elegant flowery aromas with some pear fruit don't prepare you for the impressively intense and concentrated flavors of brioche and apple. Memorable stuff.
White
2005 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Domaine Sainte Claire Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis
86 points
Bready-stemmy nose. Juicy flavors that finish with some bitterness.
White
2006 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay
flawed
All funk, no fruit. Non-representative bottle.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
2005 Bodegas Nekeas Vega Sindoa Tempranillo - Merlot Spain, Navarra
83 points
Dark plummy red. Candy-fruit character gives an impression of artificiality. Decent, but comes off like a generic Languedoc or Falesco Vitiano.
Red
2004 Dehesa de Rubiales Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León Alaia Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
89 points
Medium garnet-red. Organic nose is chock full of terroirish minerality, with some tobacco in there as well. Taut acids keep the berry fruit and earth flavors in line. Excellent expression of attractive rusticity. My first encounter with Prieto Picudo, but it won't be my last.
Red
2005 Castle Rock Zinfandel Mendocino County USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
83 points
Medium dark violet-red. Oddly inexpressive nose shows a little high-toned character but that's about it. Sweet entry, short but nicely balanced.
Red
2005 Four Vines Zinfandel Old Vine Cuvée USA, California
87 points
Medium red with a salmon rim. Burnt briar and ripe but restrained fruit on the nose. Nicely dry, with a decent midpalate. Very serviceable Zin.

Flight 3 (11 notes)

Red
2005 Marziano Abbona Barbera d'Alba Rinaldi Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
86 points
Dark plummy red. Sweet raspberry fruit has a hint of bubblegum. Nice fruit-acid balance on the palate, but on the simple side.
Red
2004 Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Rosso Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso
87 points
Medium dark red-garnet. More traditionally styled nose features ripe and sour cherries. Fairly broad in texture, but most memorable for a crescendo of mouthwatering acid in the mouth.
Red
2003 Bertani Secco-Bertani Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Valpantena
88 points
Surprisingly evolved light-medium garnet. Soy-doused meat, raspberry, and cherry aromas. Nicely juicy, with a floral element that develops in the mouth.
Red
2005 Nicolas Rossignol Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
82 points
Medium violet. Fresh, even chlorinated nose is followed by a palate of mostly acid. Needs fruit.
Red
2005 Cillar de Silos Ribera del Duero El Quintanal Vendimia Seleccionada Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
89 points
Virtually opaque reddish purple. Ultraripe cranberry complemented by subtle oak on the nose. A dry attack is followed by increasingly intense, extracted blackberry fruit. Delicious right now.
Red
2004 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
87 points
Light-medium garnet-red. A little closed, giving up just a single note of strawberry. More power evident in the mouth, with fair concentration and no heaviness. Give it some time.
Red
2005 Domaine des Entrefaux Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
86 points
Dark purple-red. Ripe nose features prominent meat and mineral. Flavors are even more mineral-driven. Decently structured, but lacks a little delineation.
Red
2003 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
87 points
Medium maroon. Warm aromas of chocolatey currant and mint. Lightly extracted yet surprisingly good structure, with more sweet chocolate flavors.
Red
2006 Corrina Rayment Shiraz Revolution Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
85 points
Inky red-black. Shockingly ashen nose takes time to give up any fruit, in this case blackberry. Virtually no heat despite 16% ABV. Sweet fruit flavors compete with more ash, although the competition ends quickly as all the flavor peters out.
Red
2004 Langmeil Three Gardens Grenache Shiraz Mataro Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
87 points
Medium garnet-red. Tobacco and roasted berry aromas. Quite sweet, plush, and smooth; this definitely fits the modern Aussie mold in terms of those aspects.
Red
2005 Langmeil Hangin' Snakes - Shiraz Viognier Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Dark purply red. Nice floral lift to the ripe cherry/plum fruit, with a hint of well-measured oak. Vanilla-edged fruit flavors present with very good concentration and are unencumbered by heaviness.
