Introduction
The VDP shows their wines from Grosse Lage in some selected bigger citys all over Germany. This Tour is for the GG from the regions of Franken/ Rheingau and Württemberg. The estates bring all of their GG, Riesling as well as Burgundy white and red as well as Lemberger (Blaufränkisch).
Flight 1 - VDP- Tour Franken (11 notes)
Flight 2 - VDP- Tour Rheingau (21 notes)
White
2014 Peter Jakob Kühn Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Rheingau
opulent nose of ripe tropical fruit, superb richness, very layered bottle, mineralic, herbal aromas, this wine is singing now, complex top bottle with a very long salty finish, will benefit from 5+ years in the cellar, **(***), 92-95+
White
2015 Künstler Hochheimer Hölle Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Rheingau
Quite subdued nose, lots of stonefruit, yellow ripe peaches, energetic on the midpalate, full ripe fruit with superb precision, ending very long and saline, an impressive wine, for the next decade+, **(**+), 91-94+?
White
2015 Weingut Spreitzer Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Rheingau
Another very impressive wine from another estate from the Rheingau, having not tried this vinyard often before, I have to admit: again a stunning wine from Mittelheim, pineapples with an superb start, very concentrated, layered with great depth, refined long+ finish, for the next decade+, **(**+), 91- 94?
White
2012 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Rheingau
No doubt the most matured bottle of the four presented vintages of the Gräfenberg, a whiff of petrol, tropical fruit such as apricot, creamy texture, harmonic midpalate, energetic and tasty, long+ finish, will evaluate for 5- 10 years+, **(**+), 90-93+?
Flight 3 - VDP- Tour Württemberg (13 notes)
Red
2014 Weingut Aldinger Untertürkheimer Gips Spätburgunder Marienglas Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
Very roasty, smoky, for me a very "german" nose which I do not prefer, little fruit, roasty aromas like coffee, very young, all components at the moment unbalanced, ending long but very acidic in the background, needs time, (***-+?), 87-91+?
Red
2014 Weingut Aldinger Fellbacher Lämmler Lemberger Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
Starting very herbal, peppery, black beerry, good persistence on the midpalate, silky tannin, great depth, ending long and tasty, needs time, *(**+-*), 90-93+?
Red
2014 Weingut Dautel Cleebronner Michaelsberg Lemberger Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
this vintage only labeled as Michaelsberg GG, ripe, red and black cassis, savoury tannin, very persistent on the midpalate with great richness, ending dense and very long, way too young, for the next decade+, *(***-?), 90-93+?
White
2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Fellbacher Lämmler Grauer Burgunder Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
Vanilla in the nose, flowered, lucious body, pears, apples, very creamy texture, concentrated, ending long and tasty, needs time, for the next decade, *(**+-?), 88-91+?
White
2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Uhlbacher Götzenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
Much like the mineralic Nahe style, some lemon zest, very fresh and way too young, bonedry, ending persistent, saline and very long, if you like this style this wine is highly recommended, for the next decade+, *(***-?), 90-93+
Red
2013 Weingut Herzog von Württemberg Pinot Noir Mundelsheimer Käsberg Großes Gewächs
Germany, Württemberg
subtle red berry in the nose, starting very delicate, smooth, refined, little herbal, well stuctured, ending long, my first experience with this estate, positive surprise, for the next 5+ years, **(*+), 89-91
Closing
First I thank the VDP for showing their GG once again. There was not that much time for the tasting. Some four hours in the afternoon. No chance to taste the mayority of the brought GG. I selected by myself. Therefore I wrote mostly brief TN which are showing just my today honest opinion of the tasted samples. All younger wines have to evaluate! It was very interesting that some estates brought some older bottles.
