Introduction

Ringing in the New Year on a very frigid evening.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

2000 Charles Ellner Champagne Brut Prestige France, Champagne

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was still drinking nicely with some oxidative character and maturity. Lemon, honey, toasted, oxidative with a subtle smokiness and mid weight. Very enjoyable, it is time to drink these up.

N.V. Veuve Doussot Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. It was nice to revisit this - right in my wheelhouse. A delightful toasted nose and palate, built with some nice structure, 80PN, 20C, pear, stone fruits, fairly big and dynamic with depth and power and red fruit that emerge on the nose and in the mid palate.

2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. This is sneaky good - not that the fact that this is good would be surprising - more so it is how this just comes from a place of subtlety and finesse to build on the depth. There is an ultrafine bead with some subtle cream and a building toast, brioche, lemon, lemon peel, almond paste and a somewhat oxidative palate with chalk based crisp minerality. This still seems like it has room to improve.93+ to 94pts.

Light gold color. Followed one glass for 3+ hours. This was by far the most disappointing wine of the evening. We had a very similar experience to bjscmidt. This was just a mess of oak with little to no fruit showing on the nose or palate. Seemed like it was reductive on top that . Wood, alcohol, burnt barrels, vanilla on the palate. At the 3 hour point, there was at least some pear and minerality showing, but still underwhelming. Put it this way, I had no interest in drinking it. Maybe this get better, but at five years...

Addendum: File this under the FWIW heading. This is the SAME bottle of wine. I've had this vacuumed and in the fridge since opening on 12/31/17, found the bottle tonight and thought I'd see if it was any good or more likely if it was fit for cooking. Surprisingly, to say the least, this was in good shape and drinking far better now than it had on opening some 62 days later. So you're probably thinking I'm out of my mind, and maybe I am, but that's beside the point. I'm not saying, I'm just saying, I really do like this now. The nose pleases with apple and stone fruits, butter, and a stone note of minerality. The palate is rich and and textured, juicy apple and pear with hints of some pineapple in the background, buttery, but not so over the top, and some wood spice on the finish. No doubt this California chardonnay, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how well this rounded out and became balanced given its completely dishevelled initial showing; not to mention that this held together for over 2 months - go figure. Easily 91pts now.

2014 Château Guiraud 'G' Sec France, Bordeaux

Pale gold color. Drank a small glass over 20 minutes. This had a fairly typical Sauvignon Blanc nose, SB70, Sem30; plenty of grapefruit, lemon grass, and hints of cat pee. The palate is crisp offering good citrus and acid with a fairly balanced style, grapefruit, lemon, grass, and cat pee with a good bit of flinty minerality. Very good.

Very dark red/purple color. Slow-O for about 2 hours. Drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. The nose stars here and it really is pretty and classic with a wonderful mix of funk, earth, pencil, and black fruits. One of the those noses you can just smell all night. Now I wish the palate could back that up better. It isn't bad by any means, but it shows the austerity that so many of the '95's do. I have had this when it was more open, and perhaps a decant would have assisted, but really after 3 hours in glass it should have improved if it was going to happen. The palate has scorched earth, more brooding black fruits, some earth, a bit if sharpness along with an astringent tannins. We drank this alongside a '97 Etude Cab which surprisingly had a very similar nose - that over time was even more
similar. In the end I favored the Etude slightly with its fruit profile being more enjoyable. 91+pts.

Very dark garnet/purple color. Slow-O for 2 hours, drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. Excellent nose, with cassis, earth, blackberry, a touch of funk and graphite. After a good hour this added a nuanced mint note on the nose too. Big on the palate with concentration, blackberry liqueur, cassis, dark chocolate, some smoky scorched earth, wood, and grainy firm tannins with good length. We drank this next to a '95 GPL which I fully expected to prefer, but in the end, I preferred the bigger fruit next to the more austere palate of the GPL. The noses became quite similar though I would favor the GPL by a bit. Likely at peak, this has the stuffing to go another 5 years anyway.

Very dark red/purple color. Slow-O for 3 hours; drank 1 glass over 2 hours plus. This was tighter and more structured currently showing more wood and tannins that need to integrate yet. The nose shows potential with earth, black fruit, cedar and a savory element. The palate starts with black licorice, big dark less defined fruit, tobacco, and tannins that are currently in attack mode. This is one of the bigger, more structured '04's, that unlike many, is not ready to go yet. Sit back and wait for this come around. I'll probably go at least 3 years before tapping into my stash, if not longer. No worries about this one not aging. 90+(+)pts.

Purple color. Slow-O over 3+ hours, drank a glass on day one and revisited on day 3. The word masculine comes to mind when drinking this wine. A bit of a heavyweight boxer with a ton of power and concentration, a little herbaceous on the nose, with blackberry, huckleberry, and black currants, pepper and anise along with new wood. The palate has tart black fruits, tart plum skin, juneberry, green tobacco leaf, and wood. The tannins have nice silky texture on day 3, though they were firmer and still have some grip. There was some heat, though far less on day three. Lots of structure and depth, this was more enjoyable on day 3 with a nice classic big style cab nose that lost its herbaceousness and added some earth and nuance. It would have paired awfully well with a big juicy steak. This is one of those wines that I'd like to see again at 15 and then 20 years of age to see how it ages. 90ish day 1 and probably 91 on day 3.

N.V. Charles Mignon Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Comte de Marne France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. After having had 3 Champagnes earlier in the evening, I cracked this for the ball drop. I've had good luck with these in he past and this bottle seemed particularly good. There was blast of yeast and minerality with a very fine bead and big effervescent mousse. Very fresh, lively with distinct pear and a clean refreshing finish. I gotta remember to keep an eye out for this.
