Introduction

Small gathering of friends to nerd out over some wine.

Flight 1 - Whites (3 notes)

Conditional double blind; California or Burgundy chard

White
2014 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

91-92 This did very well considering the tough competition, tasted double blind with Aubert & Raveneau. My contribution and I was hoping based on a few previous reviews may trip us up a bit. Whole group called CA, however did show very nice and one taster identified as Aubert. Very good acid, solid mineral presence, lemon, fruit was a touch ripe and more fruity than the Rav.

93-94 Great showing for this bottle. Tasted double blind, oak was detectable but well integrated (showed much more on days 2 & 3), good mineral presence, creamy, rich, decadent, I thought this was Mersault with a little age, our whole group actually guessed this as old world. Had a little remaining that I tried on days 2 & 3, still holding up with a very long finish and more pronounced oak.
White
2011 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

93-94 Tasted double blind. I called Chablis 2010-2013 and leaning toward Rav. Lemon zest, oyster shell minerality, acid and focus on this wine was on point.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 notes)

Conditional double blind; Cali Cab/blend or Bordeaux

Red
1990 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

WOTN for reds for entire group. Tasted double blind, brick red with a light brick rim, very resolved tannin, pure finesse at this point and in a perfect spot with a little air, pepper, ash, tobacco, leather, good acid and maybe a touch of VA. Fully mature and ready to go.

1998 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Double blind, brick red, dust and funk on the nose, vegetal, earthy, old tobacco (I'll probably be crucified for this next statement, but...) reminded me of 87 Mondavi Reserve tasted this past winter. Good acid, resolved tannin but retained some grip. Really unfurled around hr 4 for me.

Double blind, I was a little off as I put this as Bordeaux at 15 yrs of age; fairly classic Bordeaux nose, faint peppers, tobacco, cedar, dark red fruit, moderate acid, darkest wine of the 3 tasted blind, still with pretty decent structure, tannins are very well integrated but this has time. Of the flight I thought this had the most potential for further improvement. 92-93+

Flight 3 - Extras (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne
94 points
Nicely developed 02, fine bead, honey, almond, baked apple and touch of brioche all balanced by a zingy and zesty acidity. Not as masculine as dom or Krug but not as elegant as Salon or Crys, lies somewhere in the middle body and structure wise. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of these that I have had. No rush on these as I imagine they will continue to drink well for a while to come.

2009 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Tasted blind, moderate oak, a touch of detectable heat, moderate acid, full bodied. Had a new world build but everything about the wine felt old world. I couldn't even call a varietal. This one really stumped a few of us. Surprised at the reveal, I had this exact wine a few years back! Maybe not a go to for me but definitely a fun and food friendly wine.

Tasted blind (cork popped and allowed to breath a few hrs but no decant), Very tight, super floral nose, lots of violets, made me initially think cru beaujolais (obviously darker color than beaujolais). Moderate tannin, moderate acidity, low alcohol (I said 12-12.5% I think was somewhere in the middle), lots of pepper and savory notes. Before guessing was told that it was a rhone wine with high acclaim. Even after that I could not picture this as being from Rhone (northern or southern). After reveal it made more sense, however I remained in disbelief that this was a 100pt wine. Had about half the bottle left over and tasted the following day. For me didn't change a whole lot, so maybe needs a lot of time, but unsure about that. 90+
