Introduction

First trip to Vienna and found myself seeking out a clear wine lovers haven.

Flight 1 - Tour of the wine cellar (5 notes)

I hadn't realized that this included getting to try a few wines so a welcome surprise. Each were a bit different and fun to try. I esp enjoyed the Austrian white which was quite pleasant.

White
2013 Attila Homonna Furmint Tokaji Határi Hungary, Tokaji
My first experience with a dry Tokaji and to be honest I wasn't 100% sure what to think. In some ways I like this wine. It is very crisp. Very precise. More one-dimensional. There's a hint of almost sour and yet I feel like if you were eating this with food that would complement something very well. I suppose I will say I'll hold judgement for future experiences. It was alright though.
White
2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Interesting to try. I've only had the very aged versions of this wine and what surprised me the most was how much they have in common with the note very aged version of this wine. There's a waxy character and almost a hint of oxidation going already. It's an intense wine and doesn't steal the show with a big group.

White
2015 Weingut R & A Pfaffl Grüner Veltliner Hommage Reserve Austria, Niederösterreich, Weinviertel
Probably unfair, but this was the favorite of my whites. There was almost a hint of sweetness to it. It's a wine that isn't looking for food or other accoutrements. Instead it's just very pleasant and enjoyable to drink. Not overly differentiated or complex, but the kindof wine that makes you happy to have taken a sip and almost suggests the weekend should be starting.
Red
2015 Johann Schwarz Rot Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
I was prewarned that the reds from Austria are perhaps not quite as well respected as the whites. This is a red from a producer who is trying to change all of that, but still sorting things like appropriate oak treatment. And working with a grape that's a bit off the beaten track and where I haven't seen people draw out complexity. So it's bright and fine and even strikes me as a wine that understands a good steak dinner, but didn't stand out.
Red
2012 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This is always a favorite wine and a nice way to finish the tasting at the Coburg Palace. Very approachable even this young. A nice almost savory note that I think comes from that stem inclusion but also a lovely red fruit background. It's drinking quite well and just enjoyable in general. Will let ours keep lying for a few more years, but this might be a wine that is ok with an earlier drinking time.

Flight 2 - Dinner @ Silvio Nickol (3 notes)

Unfortunate since I was eating dinner by myself so wasn't able to order all of the wines I found interesting. I was very close to getting a '98 Jamet that looked awesome. Or a birth year Ausone. But at the end of the day the Clos Rougeards have become so rare I ended up in that spot and I wasn't disappointed.

Some really interesting food as well at this place. Would definitely go back if in town again.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Mailly Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Picked this wine solely because it was the only bubbles by the glass on the menu that I hadn't tried before. It was quite nice. All Pinot Noir which I think always adds a bit of a spice side to the champagne that I like. Not a champagne that really jumps out, but it was a nice start to the meal and paired well with the early appetizers.
Red
2009 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Hard to decide what to get as the wine menu is pretty impressive at Silvio Nickol. Ended up with this just because it's such a great deal and it seems with the newfound popularity it's quite hard to find. It didn't disappoint. Opened and decanted and drank over the course of prob 3-4 hours. This is more salt of the earth wine. There's a savory side, but more almost vegetal. Perhaps still the lavender I got a few years ago. Touch of black fruits poking through. Very well structured and pulled together. It's still a young wine with a long life left, but it was very enjoyable this evening.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1993 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
There really aren't any comparables to D'Yquem. This isn't the best version I've had - it's perhaps missing a touch of acidity and a balance and an almost hint of sour in there - but it's still very good. Long finish. Apricot and honey and orange blossom. Could pair this with quite a few things, but went very nicely with the signature dish of foie gras and carrots (sounds a bit odd, but it was fabulous).

Both good events. Highly recommend making a visit if in town.
