2013 Teso La Monja Toro Alabaster Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
94 points
Tasted blind. Decanted. From centenarian ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines, vineyards in Valmediano, La Jara and Marinacea (800-900 metres altitude), 18 months in 100% new French barriques, 14.5% ABV. Medium deep colour, youthful and lively; complete but still quite closed on the nose, black cherries and tar, brooding depth; the surprisingly fresh palate displays lots of noble, low toast oak, tightly wound, energetic, fierce tannins; almost completely closed on the oaky finish. Needs time, interesting to see whether the extraction will prove too ambitious. No idea where this is going to. Provisional score (93). On the second day, when the wine has opened up and relaxed a bit, a clearer picture emerges of a pure and precise wine, still not easy to approach but easier to read, with impressive component parts that will need at least another five years to integrate. The floral lift and warm spices are particularly attractive, but the question remains whether the fruit will outlive the tannins (94).
