Flight 1 - WHITES (5 notes)

White
1994 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
92 points
Apricots, and other tropical fruits, but great acidity. Nice minerality on the finish. Seems to need a bit of time for the acids to mellow and the complexity emerge.
White
1995 Didier Dagueneau Silex France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
90 points
High in mineral, but the acids in the wine was the dominant feature. Mouthwatering in intensity, but too much at this time. Cellar this baby.
White
1997 Francois Flesch Tokay Pinot Gris France, Alsace
94 points
Honey, intense, caramel, sweet minerals. Quite nice.
White
1988 Hugel Gewurztraminer Jubilee France, Alsace
89 points
Sulfuric at first (rotten eggs?), but it blew off rather rapidly. Ended up being a very nicely balanced, slightly spicey wine, with enough acids for further aging.
White
1988 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre France, Alsace
90 points
Honey, floral, ginger. Nicely balanced wine that is holding up quite nicely.

Flight 2 - REDS (11 notes)

Red
1997 Flowers Pinot Noir Carneros USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
88 points
Light, muted nose. A bit closed. Not showing much today.
Red
1997 Flowers Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
94 points
Cassis, and dark cherry aromas. Spicy and cola-like. Deeply concentrated wine, that still holds onto it's pinot character.
Red
1997 Flowers Perennial USA, California, Sonoma County
85 points
Light to no nose. A simple bistro wine. A wine for simple, hearty food.
Red
1997 Martinelli Pinot Noir Martinelli Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
93 points
Killer sweet cherry nose. Some dusty earth and spice. Almost a cherry liquor kind of intensity, yet a fairly light color. Wonderful finish. A bit hot, but not too overbearingly so.
Red
1997 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Olivet Lane Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
93 points
Soft, round, and packed with nice cherry fruit. Framed with lovely RRV spice. Good extraction, but not overdone. Lovely.
Red
1996 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
87 points
Low acid, round wine. Pleasant "drink me now" kind of wine, but nothing out of the ordinary here.
Red
1994 Sanford Pinot Noir USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
87 points
Tomato and sage. Some red fruits, but a little herbal. Nice, but not my style.
Red
1996 Ojai Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
90 points
Dark purple. A wine that underwent heavy saignee. Unusually purple for a pinot noir. Roasted plumbs, and other dark fruits. This is more like a Syrah. Perhaps a bit over-done.
Red
1991 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
88 points
Nice nose of freshly plowed earth. Some dark fruits, but a bit of a metallic finish that detracted.
Red
1995 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
80 points
High acid, tart cherry. Simple, and a bit harsh cranberry flavors. Not all that pleasant.
Red
1995 Domaine Chicotot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
86 points
High acid, metal filings, steely and somewhat lean. Not all that pleasant. A little short. Perhaps this needs time.
