Stockholm

Introduction

As usual an overwhelming number of wines for anyone to take in. Hence my relatively short comments on each wine. Overall the wines were as expected on a very high quality level but not at the consistenty top standard as I felt the 2016's were when comparing notes from a similar event.

Flight 1 (29 notes)

Red
2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Aromatic, well balanced with red and blue fruit. Good long balanced finish and very good value. 92-93p

2018 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
95 points
Violets, licorice, dark fruit. Deep, but not heavy and very pure. The balance is perfect, the rather high alcohol is never felt. Tannin very fine but still rather harsh at this stage. Should have bright future! 94-96p

Red
2018 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Dark raspberries from Merlot. Freshness from Cab Franc plus the charachteristic violet and lavender notes. Tight impression with silky but very present tannin. The balance is there for a great wine but this requires patience. A gorgeous reference wine! 96-97p
Red
2010 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
Sweet opulent dark red fruit nose, a 99 pointer on the nose. Soft in the mouth but the tannin needs more time.

2009 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Plums, sweet fruit nose with secondary notes. Intoxicatingly good on the nose. Cigar and leather aromas starting to appear already. Soft and super silky tannin. Ready to drink.
Red
2018 Château Bellevue St. Émilion Grand Cru France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Sweet, fresh, red/black fruit aromas, Great freshness and silky tannin, great balance. Long, elegant and feminin touch. 100% Merlot. 94-96p
Red
2015 Château Bellevue St. Émilion Grand Cru France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Not much of notes. Seductive nose with sweet red fruit. Good structure but soft and silky impression. Pure Merlot wine. Not as good as the 2018 tasted alongside but still very high level.
Red
2014 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Plush, voloptous yet restrained. Finish is slightly inky still but overall very good. Not ready. 91-92p

2018 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Modern, rather generic Bordeaux style with silky tannin. Very good but not great or perhaps better described as lacking personality. Or maybe it was too late in the show for me to appreciate? Will try to taste again at some point. 91-93p

2010 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Lovely mature nose with secondary aromas. Soft already and with silky elegance due to the slow extraction process according to the winemaker. Drinks very well now but will keep and develop further.

2018 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
Rich dark fruit with a modern, inviting style. Sweet voilets. Elegant with very fine tannin. Accessible now before closing down. Give it 10+ years.
Red
2008 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points
Very opulent fruit but too much vanilla aromas. Good but not great. Too short notes.
Red
2018 Château Brane-Cantenac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
Sweet appealing nose with feminin (stupid word really) elegant Margaux typicity. Good concentration with silky fine grained tannin. Should come out on top. 93-94p
Red
2018 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
Soft, sweet aromas of deep strawberry and cassis. Plush, yet structured. Fine and ripe tannin, hardly detectable, A great success!

Lots of deep dark fruit, cassis, sour cherries, licorice, grass, spices i.e. very much more complex nose than most. Perfectly pitched with great balance and with brilliant prospects. 97-98p

Not much of notes on this one but very soft on the nose and almost mellow in the mouth. Drinks early, maybe even very early?

2018 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Sweet, rich, concentrated and oaky. Reminds me of 2014 L-Barton but this is much more refined. Long nice finish. Very likeable. 93-94p
Red
2018 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
Sweet , elgeant, fresh fruit with cab franc notes. Very good balance and very open and accessible compared to its peers. Good value.
Red
2018 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Nice dark deep fruit dominated by cassis. Harsher tannin than Las Cases. Savoury and with good purity and fruit. Rather full and rich though, maybe a bit too much? 93-95p

2018 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
98 points
Fabulous concentration and depth. Cassis, blackish raspberry, licorice and packed with fruit. In the mouth it's sweet fruit, fine tannin and great acidity to balance. Near perfect and with great lenght on the finish. 97-99p
Red
2011 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points
Raspberreis, licorice, violet and plums. Sweet and developed and charming nose. Drinks very well now and should be really good value compared to other Conseillante vintages. Elegant and very enjoyable.
Red
2018 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Concentrated aromas of deep dark fruit, oak and some smoke. Sits well in the mouth with its deep fruit. Full bodied. Maybe too much of everything but time will tell if this blockbuster turns into something more refined down the road. Too (?) powerful and too much (?) oak for a Margaux.
Red
2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Modern, low key nose with an unusual softness and elegance. Almost verging on thin and lacking the usual power. Comparing notes with others this could be an off bottle. No rating.
Red
2014 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Sparse notes. Fresh, fruity with high acidity. Plush taste with high acidity. Hold for now.

2018 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
Interesting to taste this as I hold some of the later vintages. Very aromatic nose of dark fruit with real depth. Great balance and harmony with a long finish. A bargain. Best R-S I have ever tasted.

2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Soft and plush with a generous profile. The typical SHL smokey, flinty nose is recognisable. Relatively rich and with a long lingering finish. 94-95p
White
2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Flint, peach, calcarious soil. Round fruit impression with high, bright almost sharp acidity. Great balance from this top notch white. 93-94p

2018 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Fresh nose of peach and gooseberry. Surprisingly sweet, almost off dry. Acidity on the low side this time? 92-93p

2012 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Graphite and cassis. Soft and a bit inky. Light vintage that leaves a cool impression. Tannins still unresolved but still I felt this is in a good place for drinking now.
