Tinta Negra (so a red grape, unlike other Madeira). Verdelho style, so c. 70g/l RS. Really quite sweet, nice balance to it, tobacco, toasted nuts. Some spice and strawberry jam. Warming and delicious, but a bit straightforward.

Some high-toned furniture polish on nose. The sweetest style, but lots of tangy, dried-fruit flavour keeps from being cloying. Chocolate milk on the finish. Addictive.

So deep. Smoky rubber, beef broth and coffee on the volatile nose. Grippy and saline in the mouth. Bitter lemon on the mid-palate and a spicy, savoury finish. Just getting into its stride.

Dusky, creamy rose on the nose, and some VA. Treacle toffee and marmalade on the palate, coffee and mushroom coming through towards the finish. Really long and savoury. Acidity is high and the aftermath of each sip is lip-smacking

Creamy nose, with toasted nuts. Dark caramel and apricot jam - like Sachertorte. Rich, gastronomic and persistent

Really dark appearance. Very high-toned on the nose. Christmas pudding and tar. Jaffa cakes. Very long indeed.
